Random one this. How many of us shun a dented can of beans because it has a dent in the can? Obviously such a dent would cause no harm or change to the product contained within...but still....we leave them, and worse still shops throw them out

Actually dents can cause real danger as they can lose the vacuum.

When I worked in Sainsburys I always convinced people not to buy dented cans. It's something to do about bacteria and I hated Sainsburys.

Apparently the flavour of dented tin products differs and is inferior to that of undented things.

An episode of Quincy told me to never trust dented cans.

It's due to the metal being bent inside and releasing zinc into the food.

Or some other shite like that.

With a dent in the can comes a weak area of the casing, and Russian spies can sneak dynamite into the casing without the consumer ever noticing. Health hazard.

I remember watching Newsround when i was young and they featured dented cans on it and told people that they shouldn't buy them for the reasons others have discussed (except the russian thing). As a result i've actually learned something and can confirm that Newsround is an excellent programne for kids.

The dents often make it a pain in the arse to open the can with a can opener.

Yeah, dented cans can make the food worse, so don't go for those.

People still buy them when they come through my till. They're not going to be that much worse if you're eating them within the next couple of days.

you fussy gits!

if it was that much of a design flaw they would have revamped the humble can years ago, i will usaully pick up a can as long as its in reasonably good condition, i.e. no backroom football antics!

I work at a pet food store, and have to explain to a lot of old people that dented cans won't kill their pets. They used to be dangerous apparently due to a coating of material that was put inside the can to stop the metal leeching in, which could break if the can was dented, but modern ones are made differently apparently so they won't cause any harm.

Still wouldn't buy a dented can though, don't know why.

I remember this, the dent deforms the inside of the can and breaks the coating on the inside and then it rusts all over you beans, don't think rust can harm you but...

Why would anyone take a dented can if there was a normal one available?
