PostDermatologists say we're showering too much

YouGov/Yahoo wrote:Dermatologists say too many showers are bad for your skin. But most of us shower at least once a day

It goes without saying that establishing how many showers you should be taking to stay clean depends on your day to day habits.

However, dermatologists are in broad agreement that showering every day isn't strictly necessary unless you are doing physical exercise or exposing yourself to a dirty or dangerous substance.

Majority of Brits shower at least once a day

Yet according to new YouGov survey run in collaboration with Yahoo for the latest episode of "Britain is A Nation Of banana splits" (working title), the majority of Brits insist on having a shower or bath at least once a day. One in twenty (6%) have a shower or bath several times in a day.

Half (49%) do so once a day, and one in five (20%) go for 4 to 6 times a week – leading to a total of three quarters of Britons who are showering at least once every other day.

Just under a fifth (18%) shower two to three times a week, and three out of a hundred (3%) shower once a week.

Get out the shower, Londoners

Women and men are almost identical in their showering habits, as are different age groups.

It is Londoners who stand out as the most hygiene-obsessive region in the nation - they are ten percentage points more likely than the national average to shower or bathe at least once a day (64% vs 54%).

I stopped washing my hair every other day in the shower - that certainly wasn't doing me any good. It was itchier and became greasier far quicker than if I just left it alone longer and now it's much better. I think it's just getting past that initial phase of accepting an overly oily head!

I do tend to shower every day in the summer but every other day the rest of the year. My L'Oreal anti-perspirants do claim to work for up to 96 hours but I can't say I've ever tried...

I shower every morning, but as I barely have any hair on my head I rarely have to shampoo, and even then it's a token gesture to the last remaining brave souls up there on the Great Hill of Sorrow.

I don't shower every day because I've heard of studies like this before, plus sometimes I just can't be bothered. I feel it, though. Even if I haven't done any exercise I can feel that I haven't taken a shower. It doesn't feel nice.

There was an article in one of the papers today about a couple that wash their hair with piss. :|

I exercise 6 days a week so I shower 6 days a week. Seems to work out quite well.
I have a friend who used to shower three times a day. He'd always complain that the Japanese summer heat was making him need to shower more but personally I think his excessive washing was making his skin go oily faster.

I certainly don't shower everyday. Don't really see the point unless, as the article says, you are doing exercise etc.

It certainly depends where you live though. When I lived in Rome I was sweating my arse off everyday, it's horribly polluted and humid so I would sometimes have 2 washes a day. But here in Hamburg the weather is relatively cool, with less smog and pollution so I rarely feel "dirty". I can certainly see why Londoners are most likely to wash more often as 5 minutes on the tube and you have soot up your nose after all.

My gf used to wash her hair daily so I had to tell her to stop as I could tell it wasn't doing it any good.

I shower every morning and after excercising (4-5 times a week) so I’m showering too much according to this. I don’t really need the morning showers if I’m honest, but I enjoy them because it wakes me up.

I am quite lucky in that I rarely stink even if I have skipped a shower or two. I usually shower once a day, but if I am not leaving the house then I don’t always bother. The wife will tell me if I stink.

I shower every day as otherwise my musky aroma becomes too much, and I start to get actual headaches from what I can only assume is my own stink.

I only shower on days I'm going to leave the house, if I'm staying in all day I'm not going to waste part of that showering

I used to get severe eczema and still see a dermatologist every three months. They've always told me that showering twice a day is better for my skin.

I shower every day, because I can't stand feeling dirty. Besides, my job is pretty active, so I'd be pretty ripe if I went more than a day without bathing. It's a courtesy to those around me, if nothing else.

If I'm feeling especially lazy I might skip one day over the weekend, but only if I'm not going anywhere.

I shower every other day, both body and hair. Would be great if I didn't have to do it as often. I never seem to get smelly but my hair goes greasy by the third day and it seems daft not to take the opportunity to wash my body while I'm leaving the conditioner in.

I frequently play tcg against nerds who smell like they haven’t showered since 2011, so it’s all relative really.

Most mornings I will wake up with my hair pointing in all manner of ungodly directions and self-braiding itself into the snakes of medusa, which only a shower and shampoo will fix. Sometimes I can do without, but not often.

I shower every other day, but my hair is grim towards the end of that so I may wash my hair more frequently if I have somewhere to go.

That is grim as strawberry float.

Normally every day, wash my hair every other. Only showered once this last week but I haven't left my bed.
