I'm a bit lukewarm on it though veering towards the positive overall.
- Most of the stuff with the human characters was a wash, unfortunately thought both leads were really poor and not really able to carry the film. The lad was especially wooden and not particularly likeable (though the latter I'd pin more on writing), while the rest of the cast hammed it up a bit too much while having pretty weak material to work with
- err, permit me to be a bit of a sourpuss but...maybe too many wink wink adult jokes? Between how many of those there were and just how abrasive many dialogue interactions were, it felt a bit unpleasant and sleazy to me, at least in the first act. Obviously fine with that in something like a Tarantino flick but it didn't sit well with me on Pokémon.
- Found it a bit exhausting at points ahah, was relieved when it slowed down after relentless action beats and constant dialogue. In particular Pika having to say something after every line of dialogue got on my nerves a bit
+ But yeah overall Ryan is great, certainly generates most of the laughs.
+ They get great use out of the Pokémon for both set pieces and gags, there's a reason Mr Mime keeps getting mentioned
And the action beats are often creative and well orchestrated
+ Perhaps more than anything, I really appreciate how unabashedly unashamed the movie is of its source material, something especially refreshing for game adaptations! Think they walked the tightrope of pleasing fans with authenticity while keeping it approachable for newcomers incredibly well. Leads to some really nice world building
Am a bit gutted I didn't like it more but I should stress the highs were very high
