Comfortably the best videogame adaptation (not a high bar to clear). Some really nice fanservice, bit of a weak third act and overrall story is meh, but characterisation is strong throughout. Highly enjoyable.

Went to a 7.30 showing.

Pokemon were realised brilliantly and the cast worked their hardest with a very expository script. Hand holding was pushed too far, but mostly because the plot was a mess  . Not sure what their understanding of detective work is in Japan.

Anyway, kids will love it and this didn't discredit Pokemon as a brand at all.

Mess is a little far but I agree with the sentiment. Even having played the game (which paces it out much slower) there were still a couple of surprises for me. As an adaptation it's great

Lovely comfortable fun but hardly revolutionary. Kids will adore it.

Most of the best bits are in trailers, and the 3rd acts a bit of a mess.

Still managed to surprise me though and it’s comfortably the best video game movie.

Best scene?

It has to be the Mr Mime interrogation for me. What was in the trailer was already great and in full it was even better. Was genuinely cracking up.

Most nostalgia?

Pikachu singing the theme song, him being sad while doing it just made it funnier.

Thing that actually surprised me?

Ditto. Even though the film set it up I with several clues I didn't see it coming. That's the best kind of foreshadowing.

I'm a bit lukewarm on it though veering towards the positive overall.

- Most of the stuff with the human characters was a wash, unfortunately thought both leads were really poor and not really able to carry the film. The lad was especially wooden and not particularly likeable (though the latter I'd pin more on writing), while the rest of the cast hammed it up a bit too much while having pretty weak material to work with

- err, permit me to be a bit of a sourpuss but...maybe too many wink wink adult jokes? Between how many of those there were and just how abrasive many dialogue interactions were, it felt a bit unpleasant and sleazy to me, at least in the first act. Obviously fine with that in something like a Tarantino flick but it didn't sit well with me on Pokémon.

- Found it a bit exhausting at points ahah, was relieved when it slowed down after relentless action beats and constant dialogue. In particular Pika having to say something after every line of dialogue got on my nerves a bit

+ But yeah overall Ryan is great, certainly generates most of the laughs.

+ They get great use out of the Pokémon for both set pieces and gags, there's a reason Mr Mime keeps getting mentioned :P And the action beats are often creative and well orchestrated

+ Perhaps more than anything, I really appreciate how unabashedly unashamed the movie is of its source material, something especially refreshing for game adaptations! Think they walked the tightrope of pleasing fans with authenticity while keeping it approachable for newcomers incredibly well. Leads to some really nice world building

Am a bit gutted I didn't like it more but I should stress the highs were very high

Not the take I was expecting

Personally I can't wait for the fan re-dubs with deadpool dialogue

Yup!

And err even though I'm a bit cooler on Pika than most I would still say it's easily better :p Though MK deserves props for also not appearing to be embarrassed of its source material

MK deserves props for being less bloody than The Wizard. Man, I loved MK when I was younger, but watching it last year made me realise it isn't as good as I thought. Still pretty good though.

Went today with my boyfriend for subtitle showing at 12:30 in Cineworld at Glasgow.

Fantastic movie, I loved it all the way - the last bit did felt rushed (dunno if good word for that) but overall went in not expecting much and ended up leaving very satisfied.

Excellent film.

What you and your boyfriend get up to in the back of the cinema has nothing to do with us.
