Say what you want about the usual plot in Quantic Dreams games, but I'm actually really enjoying the story in this.

I watched an entire gameplay walkthrough over the weekend, just out of curiosity since I don't intend to buy the game until it goes on sale. Have to say I was disappointed by what I saw. No spoilers, but I didn't feel the writing was anywhere near the mark I was hoping for. The premise of the game is fascinating, the execution...well, for me, not so much. So many possibilities - so many possibilities wasted. I appreciate that a deep, ponderous meditation on the social and political implications of a possible future in which remarkably convincing androids might co-exist alongside humanity was probably always going to be beyond the remit of a first-party PS4 game... but I have to say the characters and cack-handed writing left me less than satisfied with what finally emerged.

Why are almost all the humans in the game so unutterably contemptuous of androids - to the point of tedium? I think there's maybe one human character who treats them with something approaching common courtesy. Does David Cage have such a low opinion of humanity? Was that all he was willing to concede? It didn't work for me. I'm sure there was a meta-narrative at work (I know there was) - some commentary on present-day events - but, as usual, it lacked all subtlety and was unnecessarily heavy-handed in its execution. We don't all have to bludgeoned over the head to 'get it', Mr. Cage.

Thinking about it now, from my viewing of the full playthrough, I'm just disappointed that the story the game tells is, in the final analysis, so basic. There's a much better, far more nuanced tale in there - existentialism, humanity, the nature of being and perhaps even an exploration of human/android relationships and loneliness. Sadly, all such opportunities were lost.

The main issue is that if you've read/seen any android media then you've already seen everything this has to offer. "Android becomes human through the perspective of humanity" is the most entry level thing you can do with the setting, so you really have to nail it to carve out your niche. And while I don't entirely agree with the concept that everything has to be new and fresh, I do believe you have to be exceptional if not original.

And David Cage is as subtle as a brick. Highlight for me is the android staring right at the camera quoting MLK in a white void, not even in a speech, then explaining it's a MLK quote. Yes, thank you, David, the nuance would have passed me by otherwise.

I will gladly admit it's not as bad as I expected, but it's also not nearly good enough to save it from crushing mediocrity, which in many ways is worse. You want it to be on the levels of Beyond/Omikron/Indigo to at least be interesting. If you're left with Heavy Rain you can't even laugh at it properly.

Nicely put. Couldn't agree more.

Had a load of Tesco vouchers so I got it for just over £30 which I think is reasonable.

Been playing through a fair amount and I must admit it's definitely better than the other QD games.
Connor part is certainly my favourite, I'm loving searching crime scenes, quizzing suspects and the whole up and down relationship with Hank.
Kara is pretty good as well, but I'm not overly keen on Marcus atm.

So who else actually played through this?

I've only done one play through so far but it's been one of my favourite games this generation I think. The writing is definitely a massive step up from previous QD games and the choices you make in this do actually matter. Things you do/interact with/choose way near the start of the game actually can have consequences much later on.

If you're a fan of narrative driven games, or like games where your choices can actually influence how the story unfolds, I'd absolutely recommend picking this up.

I haven't, but god help me I actually want to now, given the mostly positive reactions its gotten. I'll probably wait until it's £25 and pick it up then.

Just finished it and really enjoyed if with its multiple endings for certain chapters and how they impact the overall story its actually a really compelling story.

If only Tell Tale had a decent engine that looked this good.

I got this via PSN's DOTW offer.

And it's absolutely fantastic, despite the fact I know most of the android tropes that this game throws at me.

I've watched / read a few reviews and this price is hugely tempting.

Go for it,It's fabulous.

I'm a good way through this but it got put on the backburner when Spiderman and latterly RDR2 came out.

Need to get back into it as I was enjoying it when I left it. Certainly not a bad game. Not for me anyway

I resisted that deal in the end as I went a bit mad and bought something else.

Detroit does look cool, though, and it's something I would like to pick up in a future sale.

Definitely pick it up as soon as you can. It’s one of my favourite games on the system.
