So any tips for a newbie, things to look out for and what o do from the start. Also what's a good starter character.
The most important noob tip is to keep pushing the difficulty up. In Diablo the higher difficulties (of which there are 15 or so) get you more xp, gold and better drops, and if you stay where it's easy the game gets soul-numbingly boring.
As for characters, they're split into two main types; melee and ranged. They're all fun in their own way, so I'd suggest trying each of them for about 10 levels or so to see which one you like the look of the best. I started by mainlining Witch Doctor, then switched to the Crusader and now play Wizard mostly.
Until you hit level 70 don't bother too much about the specifics of gear - you get new stuff all the time and its not worth spending money to improve anything until max level, which is when a whole load of new systems open up.
