Should replace it with Con Air.

The Rock, Con Air and Armageddon are all underrated masterpieces in popcorn cinema - and I'm not even joking. They take a formulaic premise, spin it into something unique, spend the big bucks and treat the story like it's actually important, because it is. Adding heart and pathos. Wonderful.

I sort of agree about The Rock and Con Air.

Armageddon is a piece of gooseberry fool movie though.

Armageddon is a piece of gooseberry fool movie though.

There are some movies that if you sit down to evaluate them as a piece of art they don't compare to other works, but as pure entertainment they work fantastically.

I saw Armageddon at the cinema so I have a special fondness for it. I also worked part time at the local Warner Bros. so I used to love to watch audience reactions to key moments in film and trailers - and it's trailer got everybody pumped especially when they are all in their medical robes and dancing including Michael Clarke Duncan. It was an event movie and coming out in late '98 it was also tapping into the pre-millennial angst that everyone was feeling or at least talking about. Ben Affleck was a biggish up and coming star, Bruce Willis was a-list, and there were all sorts of familiar c-list. An epic end-of-the-world story with an ending that was quite shocking for a Hollywood star. Remembering back I was so caught up in the the tension and build-up at the beginning and the loneliness of space and the futility of the mission - it's a Michael Bay masterclass!

Going to the cinema now is a lot of hard work because it's expensive and noisy and time-consuming - but nothing beats that magic of being in a giant room full of people all enraptured by the story you're all watching together.

My experience was very similar. But I thought it was gooseberry fool then and I still think it is gooseberry fool now.

It has its moments, the “they don’t want to pay tax again…..ever” line or Buscemi going insane for instance. But it is a gooseberry fool movie.

Horses for courses! I'm now in the mood to watch one of the Bruckheimer 3 tonight.

Moggy, I like you, you seem like a cool guy. But you're way off with Armageddon, it sits in the same category as Independence Day - cheesy, cliche, but entertaining as hell. It's Bay's best film (tallest dwarf, best looking Bristolian etc).

Armageddon is not anywhere near as good as The Rock. And Bad Boys is also better.

Armageddon is gooseberry fool, but it is better than most of Bay’s movies. Which isn’t saying much.
