I remember reading about that in N64 Magazine.

God, Starfox Adventures - that was such a dull game. I bought my Gamecube for £100 and it came with Pokemon Colosseum and this, and I remember being so annoyed at myself because both games were awful. The Gamecube redeemed itself eventually, but not a great start.

Idk, awful seems a bit extreme. For a Starfox game, Adventures probably isn't great, but taking it as Dinosaur Planet as it should have been, I remember thinking it was decent, though I also don't remember much of it in general, aside from beating the final boss, then accidentally spilling a can of pepsi on the carpet, floundering to clean it up, and missing most of the end cutscene.

And colosseum was pretty neat too. Otherwise this beta find is super cool.

I really enjoyed Starfox Adventures, the visuals (for the time) were gorgeous, and it was easier to play than the Zelda games (which back then could be incredibly frustrating at times).

I didn't care that it was different from the other Starfox games, as i found Lylat Wars to be something of a slog anyways thanks to there being no save function.

I was really disappointed by Starfox Adventure. I had followed it's development eagerly, from when it was Dinosaur Planet, and I was a massive fan of Rare at the time so my expectations were sky high. It was great looking, but rather dull. I don't think I completed it, and I wouldn't have had that many other games to distract me.

Exactly the same for me.

If you read N64, it's highly likely you saw my GB Camera pics in the gallery section. ;)

Quite a few were mine, i was a regular contributor.

I would print out a bunch with the GB Printer and pop them in an envelope.

I also enjoyed Starfox Adventures and yes it was very visually impressive at the time.

I haven't played any other Starfox games (never been into the genre) either so I didn't have any expectations of what the game would be like, plus I really like dinosaurs so any game featuring them immediately piques my interest.

Interesting to see this. Looks a bit more Zelda-like than I think Starfox Adventures ended up being? Or maybe I'm just not remembering Starfox Adventures very well. :slol: Didn't think that was a bad game though. Not amazing at all, but solid enough. Didn't need the Starfox characters though, they felt shoehorned in and a bit out of place.

So has anyone played this and was it any good?

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Fairly sure that the protagonist was supposed to be Krystal (the character Fox has to rescue) before they made the changes to the game, the fact Fox uses her staff throughout the game more than hints at that.

I think a better way of getting the Starfox characters into the game would have been to split the gameplay between the on foot adventure bits as Krystal and aerial combat sections in the Arwing as Fox but I guess that would have taken longer and cost more to make.

John at Digital Foundry produced this excellent analysis of Dinosaur Planet and Starfox Adventures. I recall Dinosaur on N64 being previewed in Nintendo mags and being excited by it; alas, of course, it was switched to the GameCube and - having never owned a GC - I never played either title.

Both games are technically impressive taking into a account the limitations of each machine and, having not previously seen much of StarFox Adventures, I love how crisp it looks and the fact that it runs at 60 FPS. All these years later and we still see games that maybe don't look as good or run so well as this did!

It's amazing to think that fans are now looking to update and complete the N64 game; it would be great to be able to play the title so many years after work started on it.

I've started it, couple hours in. It's pretty impressive scale wise for an N64 game with all the flashy cutscenes, voice acting, and big areas to explore (though I suppose after Banjo-tooie it was a natural step forward). Gameplay so far is a bit meh, and Fox McCloud being in it is a bit jarring. His introduction is very different to Adventures where I guess they hadn't thought it through yet. Also the game suddenly switches to Fox from Krystal after an hour or so, and Fox just has what looks like Krystal's staff which doesn't make sense in the story up to that point. But I guess it's not the finished build so meh lol
