Ah right yeah, you bought the Rallycross Mini...that was a mistake.

You only do that by going to Rallycross though, you wouldn't have had that problem if you'd gone straight to start a Rally.

I'm pretty sure that was the only championship I could afford. The others required 350,000 credits to purchase a vehicle.

Also it was set in the UK and I didn't really notice the type of competition it was :fp: The in-game text is quite small and narrow in a lot of areas.

karl_fletcher wrote:Are there any comparisons out there between the PS4 and XBO versions? I would rather play with the XBO controller but if one is technically superior to the other I will buy that version.

I've not seen any comparisons but I am wishing I got the PS4 version. The game isn't exactly pretty looking and the frame rate can dive at some points. I would like to think the PS4 can at least hold a steady frame rate, even if the overall visuals are the same.

Really? from the videos I have seen it looks clean and the cars are all shiny.

They're pretty much identical.

Dirt Rally: the Digital Foundry verdict

While we enjoyed the previous Dirt titles there was a sense that the series had strayed a little too far from the roots of the earlier Colin McRae games. Arcade-style handling took the lead over simulation, while visual effects work took priority over frame-rate, with a 30fps update cutting fluidity and gameplay response by half. Dirt Rally brings the series back to 60fps and does so superbly, with impressively realistic handling and smooth motion. It's a great return to form for the series and for the most part, Codemasters delivers across all formats.

Understandably, some graphical cut-backs appear on consoles in order to hit 60fps, but aside from noticeably lower quality shadows the core visuals are only mildly impacted and the presentation appears pretty similar to on PC. Key areas, such as weather, and select effects work appear identical on all formats, and there's very little to distinguish between consoles.

As expected, the PC version takes point, allowing users to dial up effects and asset quality beyond console levels. Higher resolution textures, shadows, and slightly better draw distances allow for the visuals to better hold up at resolutions above 1080p, and this provides a more refined experience overall. That said, Codemasters' conversion work is solid on consoles, and all three versions are well worth picking up for fans of the series looking for the most authentic rally game in years. However, it's the return to a 60fps that pleases us the most, and on that front Dirt Rally certainly delivers.

I must be missing something somewhere but I can't even progress past the first Rallycross. I accidentally bought the mini, so no I don't have enough funds to buy a different car and try the other championships. The game is difficult  In car view and most of the assists off I could make it as far as the semi final. Outside car view with all assists on and I can't even get off of last place. Is there another difficulty menu screen someplace or only the assists? How the hell has anyone progressed passed their first championship? Or is it just a case of grinding the first championship over and over until you have levelled you car up enough with perks to finish in the final? With the mini's at least the game doesn't give any sense of speed so going in to each corner is mostly guesswork/luck each time.

There are several ways to earn credits in the game - and they all go into your central account. Offline Championship, Custom Championship, Online Events, etc. I've earned nearly 250,000 in-game credits so far and I'm aiming for the big 500,000 to purchase one of the top-tier rally cars outright - but at any time if you want to try any of the cars on any of the tracks under any conditions you can always just go and race in a custom rally (all the cars in the game are unlocked and available to use).

BID0 wrote:The game has some bad frame rate drops in the dust cloud sections (on the Xbox at least) and the game doesn't look particularly nice. Like a higher resolution version of the last gen games. Loading feels like it takes forever.

I tried online but it's either broken or dead. Selecting PVP events and searching for Championships doesn't dish out any games/servers what so ever during matchmaking.

PS4 is fine - I haven't seen any visual or performance issues so far, but I have heard a few online reviewers grumbling about the XBox One here and there, although generally they seem to think both console versions are pretty much bang-on.

I'd say give the game a chance - don't go in expecting to win every race, slow down, be more methodical and remember your brakes are there for a very good reason. You might not win a particular race but your individual rally stage times can often swing the overall championship in your favour if you stick it out. I'm netting about 34,000 credits per Championship rally, doing a few custom Championship single stages (around 7,500-10,000 a pop) and some online events (amounts vary and these events won't be paid out until the event is timed out).

That isn't right early cars are much cheaper that that and when you go into the SP Championship there are 4 options (1 unavailable at the start) Rally, Hillclimb, RallyCross and then theres the sponsored Rally Cross which you need to have done some of Rally Cross to unlock (I think).

Anyway, they are big button options, hard to miss.

They do the job I guess. This is quite a niche racing game in a niche genre, so it would be unrealistic if you expect a AAA budget and production values. The textures are a bit ropey in some parts. Also things like weather and lighting seem to be "baked in", when you pick a race you get a choice of a weather/time of day combination for that particular track. When you've played something like Driveclub with dynamic weather and lighting affects, then it's really noticeable coming in to this.

Maybe it's because I'm playing on a 720p set and the font doesn't scale very well in that resolution, but the narrow text isn't that clear to me.

Hmm, it does feel like £42 is a bit steep for this. I may wait for it to come down in price.

If you like the older Rally games you should pick this up. I'm sure you can get it for less than £42 online surely.

I got around to making a GRcade league, it should be searchable if you type in GRcade but hopefully this direct link works too... https://www.dirtgame.com/leagues/league/35380/grcade

I've set up a mini Rally event (2 countries, 3 stages each) that runs from this morning until tomorrow morning, so take part and see how you fair against other members.

I'm hoping it's available to PC, PS4 and X1 players.

Let me know if you would like other events scheduled. What kind of race, day etc.

That sucks. It could have been fun.

I'm guessing I'm the only one with the Xbox version

I'm starting to get wins and podium places now. Once you grind the game a bit, earning money, unlocking engineer spots and signing them up on contracts, then you can unlock the engineer perks and with that level up your cars, you're much more competitive against the AI.

I think this is the only game I play online against real people to get better against the AI drivers in single player  it's usually the reverse in games.

You can't just chuck the car around and expect to come out in one piece, so prepare for humility; making it to the end of a rally in one piece is a victory in itself. Also no rewinds. Before buying a car try out perspective candidates in free play to find one you like the feel of first.

In most racing games you can pretty much try and go as fast as possible and then back off if you lose control.

Dirt Rally is best played the other way round, start slow and build up speed as you (if you) get more confident. Even on the straighter sections most of the time you won't really want to be going flat out.

And you need to look beyond just the corners. H makes a good point about the straights, you need to look along the horizon of the road as you go for dips, bumps, weird angles.

I find it easier using the in car view to get a better sense of speed as you enter the corners, and assists to off because you have full control of the car (nothing worse than the car deciding it will grip while you're trying to control a drift)

Ok, got it this morning - In terms of handling settings on the dualshock 4, how should I configure it? Currently it feels too sensitive and the car just shifts completely one way.

Initially I found the handling really difficult, but I turned the sensitivity down and the linearity up and everything handles so much better! That red mini from the DLC pack is pretty decent and makes it a bit easy.
