If you didn't like the direction of dirt 3 and showdown then this should be your game - no-nonsense rallying, rallycross and hillclimb with no dudebro voiceovers, rewinds or any other crutches. I wouldn't pay week 1 console prices ever, so wait a bit for the hype and prices to drop and go for it. There's plenty of video reviews out there so check them out too.

Yeah, I see this a lot in reviews and such, but I don't find the game difficult and I'm just using a controller (I use a 360 controller on the PC and the Playstation controller is fine on the PS4). I find the game manageable - I rarely crash off the tracks and just drive sensibly - as if I was in an actual rally car and don't want to kill myself or my co-driver. If you just apply real-world rules and caution to the way you drive you won't have any issues with the way the game plays.

The best thing about this PS4 edition is the way its quality and polish shines through when compared to both WRC5 and the Sebastian Loeb game. Codemasters are the undisputed masters of both race game technology on console and actual driving mechanics. Seriously, WRC5 was a sh*tshow (appalling screen tear and lack of optimisation for the PS4 still remains in place today) in comparison and the less said about Sebastian Loeb's driving mechanics the better. :fp:

Dirt Rally shows all the competition how these things should be done - and it does so emphatically. It's a fantastic rally game - looks great, plays great - and it really should be a part of any sim racing fans' game collection on PS4 or Xbox One.

Grand - looking forward to it. Have been disappointed by the official WRC games recently too so sounds like it should be up my street.

I managed to nab a copy for Xbox today :datass: PS4 version seems to be sold out everywhere.

I'll probably stream it tonight at about 7pm for those on the fence. Please don't let me regret buying this :dread:

It's exceptionally good, but definitely the hardest rally game Codemasters have ever made. All the handling tricks of old such as running of the barriers or epically power-sliding around corners doesn't work because they've narrowed the courses and littered the sides with rocks and other obstacles. The night races are really tough as it's so easy to knacker the headlights, from which point you can't continue as it's darker than Splinter Cell.

The rewind facility has gone from the DiRT series too.

Isn't that Forza with the rewind?

The lack of rewind is brilliant - it has no place in any racing games for obvious reasons anyway!

Codemasters implemented rewinds in the first place in the original GRID, but Forza is now far more popular.

Why? I personally don't use it if I can, you tend to get more xp/cash/whatever for either not using them or not having them on in the first place, but I think they're a good idea to get more people into racing games who otherwise wouldn't bother.

Rewinding doesn't really get you to learn much and takes the pressure away from the race.

I disagree twofold, both on it not having a place in racing games and the reasons therefore being obvious. Sure it removes pressure knowing you can simply go back and try something again, however I think it can absolutely help learning on multiple levels. It means that casuals, who before it would have gone full speed into the wall over and over again until they quit to go play cod or fifa or whatever might stick around and get more into it, something the continuing downward sales of major racing franchises shows the genre desperately needs. Secondly it can be useful to practice problem sections or corners efficiently; there are a few I can think of like the first corner of Brands Hatch or one in particular on the nurburgring that i need to spend more time going round to learn properly, so being able to go over them again and again quickly (especially on the 'ring) is a very useful tool/feature. As I recall the games that feature it do reward you for not using it or having it enabled, and you obviously can't use it in multiplayer, so what's the problem?

Wales in torrential rain can be a nightmare. :dread: I have to slow right down or I'm straight off the track, headfirst into the nearest tree. A lesson learned very quickly.

Its in Forza now, but as far as I'm aware the first instance of the rewind was in GRID, which then got carried over to the Dirt games.

I've played all of the dirt games and never realised that feature was in them  :fp: would have been dead handy on the dirt showdown tour

I'm enjoying it but finding the rallying so intense which is credit to the game. The cars and tracks look fabulous on the ps4.
Absolutely no problems using the controller works fine for me on default settings.

I haven't as yet, anybody delved into online play?
I think we can set up a Grcade online custom championship but not sure?

Edit: forgot to mention the sound, engines, everything sounds outstanding.

I'm not liking it so far.

I must be missing something somewhere but I can't even progress past the first Rallycross. I accidentally bought the mini, so no I don't have enough funds to buy a different car and try the other championships. The game is difficult  In car view and most of the assists off I could make it as far as the semi final. Outside car view with all assists on and I can't even get off of last place. Is there another difficulty menu screen someplace or only the assists? How the hell has anyone progressed passed their first championship? Or is it just a case of grinding the first championship over and over until you have levelled you car up enough with perks to finish in the final? With the mini's at least the game doesn't give any sense of speed so going in to each corner is mostly guesswork/luck each time.

The game has some bad frame rate drops in the dust cloud sections (on the Xbox at least) and the game doesn't look particularly nice. Like a higher resolution version of the last gen games. Loading feels like it takes forever.

I tried online but it's either broken or dead. Selecting PVP events and searching for Championships doesn't dish out any games/servers what so ever during matchmaking.

I think we might be able to create a GRcade league. On the first menu Leagues is an option and it's possible to open the Dirt website. I haven'y gone in to it any further than that, but I imagine that would allow us to create a league together no matter what platform we are playing from.

Why on earth are you playing Rallycross?

The Mini is the car to start with by the way as far as I'm concerned, start with anything more powerful and you'll regret it.

Because Rally and whatever the other championship type is require me to buy cars I can't afford.

I stick to rallying in career mode, you can earn money in solo custom events if you didn't know?

I would also recommend trying out different car types before you commit in the career mode, it's a long championship and you don't want to get stuck with something you don't like!

Are there any comparisons out there between the PS4 and XBO versions? I would rather play with the XBO controller but if one is technically superior to the other I will buy that version.

Ah right yeah, you bought the Rallycross Mini...that was a mistake.

You only do that by going to Rallycross though, you wouldn't have had that problem if you'd gone straight to start a Rally.
