That is absolute tosh, what a ridiculous view to take. It is very clever, yes, but there's not even a hint of "oh, aren't we intellectual" in the writing and it's certainly written in a way that's accessible for interpretation and understanding by all. Clearly they've decided that they don't want to understand it before even attempting to, for whatever reason. To be contrary, I suppose.

I don't know who those two are but their opinion there absolutely stinks

I'm with Taf, this is the greatest written video game ever. I've never experienced anything quite like it.

It is a masterpiece. Make no mistake.

It’s not trying to fool you,
Even though it would like to,
Playing this game makes me feel thick,
It’s smart but my gosh don’t it know it?!

Same criticisms were levelled by some at both Myst and (to a lesser extent) Broken Sword back in the 90s.

Sam is Entertainment Editor for TechRadar and Chris is Deputy Editor for Edge. It's a very disappointing take from them but hey, people are allowed their opinions I guess.

To be fair, isn't the first tweet more a self-deprecating joke at his own expense? It doesn't sound like he's actually played it yet, unless I'm misinterpreting it.

Edge. There we go then.

It's extremely disappointing. I want to see this game get into as many people's hands as possible so seeing, what I assume to be influential, people in the industry making absolute nonsense statements like that is really disheartening.

Doesn't take anything away from my enjoyment of the game, of course, but I can't help but get wound up by such ignorance.

Yeah the first tweet is less of an issue, although it is noticeably dismissive of the game and clearly he has already formed an opinion of what to expect of it and is choosing to engage with that in a negative manner.

You know Edge gave it a [9], right? The game is absolutely critically acclaimed, it isn't some underground, underrated title!

Having grown up with a father who has suffered with alcoholism all his life and having had my own brush with the illness, escaping only after experiencing a near-death experience similar to this games protagonist, I feel pretty confident in describing the writing in this game as authentic, raw, brave, inspiring, nuanced and deeply emotional. I don't pretend to know the developers but my understanding is that the writer, himself, has suffered with addiction and that very clearly comes across in the level of understanding and respect in his writing that you wouldn't achieve unless you'd lived through an experience yourself.

Clearly I'm not a professional writer and I lack the expertise to write about this game in detail but "it's a bit like having a conversation with someone extremely clever and my gosh don't they know it" is a literal insult.

I don't normally care for reviews and scores but clearly this is a piece of art that I hold dearly and seeing a large media influence dismissing it so flippantly hurts personally.

The voice acting is largely phenomenal from what I've heard in the first couple of hours. A handful of bits that didn't land completely, with actors not putting what felt like the right amount of emphasis on certain parts, and pronunciation choices, but I guess with so much dialogue to cover, it would be hard to get it all totally spot on. It certainly goes a long way to deal with the tedium that can come with clicking through pages and pages of text.

Cuno.

I'm 50/50 on the new narrator voice over.

They've definitely gone for a...tone. A lot of the time he sounds straight bored, and there's been a few instances where the actor has put emphasis on the wrong word in a sentence and altered the intended meaning. He does have a voice like a mug of hot milk wrapped in silk though, so that's nice.

I’ve had a few instances where the descriptive paragraphs aren’t narrated at all. Is this a bug or is it the case on PC too?

Waking up the guy asleep in the cafe at the start, the first paragraph for him was just a static noise so I’m not sure if it’s a persistent audio bug that’s occurring at random.

That sounds like a bug. I'm on PC and everything, except the interjections between spoken lines, is narrated.
