I hate May but to be fair this would have been a case of resign and maybe get back in cabinet in the future or be sacked and spend years on the back benches.

I think this is a case of "May is too weak to sack you, but if you don't resign you'll do too much damage to the party".

It should never have been Patel's choice to make. May was handed a golden opportunity to show decisive leadership and sack Patel but squandered that opportunity.
