Litter is also a cultural thing though. We don't have the habit of taking our rubbish home with us, so if there are no bins, or they are overflowing, it's just a case of stick it down wherever we can.

Our rubbish bins are also just catch-all for anything, whereas I've been in quite a few countries now where they separate paper, plastics, bottles etc. or burnables and non-burnables. I don't particularly want to compare it to Japan as we are literally wallowing in our own filth in comparison, but the onus isn't just on the amount of rubbish bins dotted on our streets.

when i was away 2 weeks ago we visited an island that you could visit but had no permanent inhabitants.
the guides told us when there were bins on the island visitors used to use them but also litter was a problem. when they took the bins away there was no more littering, simply because it was obvious that you had to take away all your rubbish and it was your problem, not someone elses.

As ridiculous as it sounds, it’s actually not that bad of an idea. If some members of the public want to fund a yacht, then they can. And if not, they’ll end up with a dinghy.

What they haven't said is that the poor and homeless will be physically building it. It'll keep them warm.

The lottery already gives charity funding across the board (to the tune of £1 billion a year) via the 30 odd or whatever other scratch cards on the market, and a further £1.4 billion has been given via the Prince's Trust in the last 10. This poxy boat isn't taking away from anything else. If royalists want to freely pay for a yacht, they're free to pay for a yacht. And as this card would be coming out of a special earmarked fund, it presumably won't be affecting public spending on the royals either. I agree there are higher priorities than a royal yacht but David Schneider for example has either run down a list of things that are being funded by the government (Grenfell fire) or are already being bolstered by said lottery causes under general ticket sales. Should it have lottery branding on it though? I don't think it should, no. It's at odds with anything I can recall the lottery brand ever doing before (outside of helping to fund the Olympics).

If people want to pay for her boat, then good luck to them. But yes, I know it looks ridiculous. Sainsbury's school sports equipment, Kellogg's free school breakfasts, Nestle free school books, and Duchy Original's yacht for The Queen...actually come to think of it that one would be more appropriate.

The point isn’t that people can choose whether to pay for a royal yacht or not. The point is that 50 Tory MPs are taking time out to request that the public fund a royal yacht.

Those MPs have been voting for austerity and cuts for 7 years now and rather than helping the needy people of this country, they are instead promoting a gambling opportunity to the poor so that a rich old lady can have a boat.

Nobody cares if royalists buy a boat. People do (and should!) care that MPs who lecture on austerity also want the plebs to contribute towards a ship for their betters.

This is something I was thinking about earlier. I specifically remember the 'live within your means' statement coming up a few times over the last few years. Seems a bit ludicrous whenever you look at this.

Honestly the depressing thing is that a lot of nations, particularly in the East and Far East, actually would be impressed with that kind of thing.
