Don't mean to be grim, but it's probably not even 600+ needing rehousing.

Even at that, this is going to be incredibly difficult. I don't think repurposing the empty homes of will be feasible.

I think Boris is going to have some questions of his own to answer.

I think there are many high-level individuals who, whether they are directly or indirectly involved in this tragedy, are going to have their political careers wiped out by this.

I don't think anyone - including authorities know the numbers.

There's people and then families of people (i.e. 4 people might need 1 house) Then there's people nearby relocated due to danger. They're struggling to get a handle on it in the short term.

As tragic as all of this is, and as much as I hate perfectly good houses being left empty (regardless of where in the country it is) you can't just recquisition people's homes. It's a mental idea.

They aren't homes if people don't live in them. I agree it's a kneejerk, unworkable solution but it's a reaction to the failings of local and central government to tackle both a housing crisis and an emergency situation affecting dozens of people.

Little appears to be getting done by those in charge who should be doing everything in their powers to help people.

I really hope there aren't riots, I hope local community leaders can calm residents and keep things to vocal, passionate protest.

The sentiment is there, but it's really not going to work. Unless you somehow get the house owners to agree to this.Which you won't.

If they get these people rehoused in 3 weeks, I will be shocked.

You can't have a PM who is unable to appear in public. She'll be gone soon.

Yup. Property is theft. Land is the natural inheritance of all and should be held in common trust. I think we are a long way away from that but hopefully it can eventually be done in a peaceful manner, even if that requires financial compensation to those whose land is taken into public ownership.

Okay, but pointless nitpicking aside, it's still a ludicrous idea, regardless of what it's a reaction to. All it has done is add fuel to the fire (no pun intended) of divisive arguments and people making this about issues that bear no relation to it.

None of the residents complaints surprise me. I've seen a number of recently installed fire doors in some refurbished flats in Northampton that have huge gaps in them and would be completely useless in a fire. They were there for a couple of years before they were fixed.

Portillo last night thinks this will be a transformational moment in social housing, and that this sends a terrible image of the UK to the rest of the world. He expects the whole lot will likely come down because the majority won't be able to be retrofitted with things like 2 staircases.

He thought May was useless not meeting people too. And that was yesterday...

And he was even more scathing on who can replace May. 'None of them have anything to offer; no charisma' apart from Davidson.

Tearing them down isn't the problem. It's what they're replaced with. Even Labour councils end up agreeing to various schemes where 175 flats will be made "affordable" in, say, a 600 tower and they're anything but. A 50% discount still leaves a £250,000-£300,000 2 bed asking price.

I've said it before - the housing crisis in this country is one of if not our biggest problems because of its knock on effects. If nothing is ever done about people that go around hoovering up properties as investments then eventually at some point you'll end up with a tiny percentage of people that actually own their own homes.

And, as I've also said before, there's no reason for any one individual to own more than one property for domestic usage other than greed.
