I had a slow day today, so watched a bunch more. There was one chuckle, at a visual gag (the mother-in-law's reaction to her drugs).

It's straight up bad. I don't like any of the characters (Bean is a just...a dick, Elfo is a pathetic creep, the demon is boring), there's been no interesting plot lines and yeah, it's not funny.

Early Futurama was great, so hopefully this plays out the same.

One small laugh in episode one, but the jokes just weren't landing. The animation is a little second rate, and the visual set pieces had no humour to them.

Futurama and early The Simpsons were great in large part because of their loveable, sympathetic, nuanced casts. Even the deliberate assholes in those series - say, Bender or Mr Burns - had touches of humanity to them that made them endearing. To be honest I could tell from the trailer that I wasn't going to like the characters in this and hearing you say this has put a nail in that coffin.

That was such a odd first episode. First thing that struck me was the animation, it’s by no means bad but something is amiss. But the pacing was what seemed so off to me, the jokes weren’t landing and scenes seemed to hang on for far too long for no apparent reason besides bad editing.

It was such a chore and a LONG 30 minutes.

Absolutely - there is nothing endearing about any of the characters in this, except maybe Luci. And even then he comes off as crass and manipulative most of the time.

The more I watch, the more I agree with the Vice article; the show is really messed up in who it chooses to poke fun at. It's about a spoilt Princess, but the jokes are all lazy stabs at poverty. There's a fair few lame attempts at satire, stuff about female empowerment etc all of which are so middle of the road they do nothing but...bring up the subject of female empowerment? I mean, they're barely jokes.

The fact Taf hates this is making me want to watch it.

I may be an insufferable bore when it comes to politics and social issues, but I've good taste in entertainment. But still, if you want to waste an afternoon like I did, knock yourself out!

Hey come on now Taf. You didn't like Prey, which is the bestest game ever in creation :datass:

Just winding you up, it doesn't look great in all honesty.

If I want animated comedy featuring arsehole lead characters then Bojack Horseman and Archer already have that covered.

I'm a little disappointed, I was expecting at least futurama cleverness or peak simpsons machine gun joke joke joke pacing. Holding out hope that it will improve though.

Ugh, this is terrible isn't it? Made it through the first two episodes but it's just not good enough, the pacing is terrible, the script lacks any real humour and the characters give you nothing to like, loathe or otherwise gain your investment.

After being so put off by it I then went back to watch some season 1 of Futurama to check I wasn't misremembering how good the people behind this should be, and nope it's a fantastic show that gooseberry fools all over Disenchantment from a great height.

Watching it back today it's amazing how much early Futurama gets right which this utterly fails at - establishing a strong ensemble cast, creating a compelling world, effortlessly distancing itself from the Simpsons, and being really strawberry floating funny on top. Given that Futurama was conceived and debuted at a time when Simpsons was still practically at its juggernaut peak it was a fantastic performance that it managed to achieve so much when set against that bar, equally it's hard to fathom how Disenchantment manages to feel so pathetic at a time when year after year of mediocre-to-terrible Simpsons has decimated any expectations we may have had.

I'll give it another couple of episodes but I can't see me sticking it out.

I don't think this is terrible at all. It just seems very average.

To think that the guys that did Futurama were involved in this. :dread:

Think I'm 6 or 7 in. Its okay, picks up a bit from the terrible first couple of eps. The giant and ambassador eps were where it picked up a bit.

It's just swing and miss and swing and miss and swing and miss. I don't think there was a single joke in the first series that actually landed. The only laughs were visual gags.

Barely feels like there have even been any swings from what I've seen so far. At least normally even in bad shows you can tell the parts where the people involved expect you to be laughing but here there have been sections where I can't even tell if they've tried to put a joke in or not.
