PostDishwasher Loading: Cutlery Handles Up or Down?
by Jenuall » Fri Oct 18, 2019 3:18 pm

Debate raging in the office today about whether cutlery should be loaded into the dishwasher with the handles down (so the "business end" of them sticks up in the air) or with the handles up.

Yes despite the impending Brexit disaster which looms large this is the thing which has really got my co-workers hackles up today it would seem!

I'm a handles up man myself - safer that way and they still get cleaned nicely as long as you don't overload the machine.

But what you do you think GRcade - what is the correct method of loading cutlery into a dishwasher?! :capnscotty:

Not really a debate then is it?

Handles up!

It’s like scissors, both you and the person unloading the washer handles the safe end.

Anyway it's handles down so the strawberry floaters get properly washed.

Mine has a tray for cutlery so they go flat or on their side.

There's always one isn't there!

Sounds interesting, but surely if you lay them on top of each other then it's harder for them to get properly cleaned?

Handles up, except for forks, because the prongs poke through the bottom of the cutlery thing.

Always have the sharp ends pointing down into the dishwasher, so that if you slip or trip onto them you don't get stabbed in the chest 20 times.

I always put them into the dishwasher handles first.

The dishwasher, Alice, prefers it that way.

The cutlery tray on mine is sort of like this:

Everything gets cleaned perfectly.

Handles up. Safer and more hygienic (i.e. when unloading the dishwasher).

Handles down so they get washed right, the exception being steak knives which go pointy side down.

Handles down, apart from pointy knives.
You can't tell if the spoons are a-spooning if their arses are in the air.

Handles down, don’t think all the blades would get cleaned properly if you put the handles up unless it wasn’t that full.

Handle downers: how do you put things in without getting food residue on your hands?

Whenever I've tried a handle down approach I've had to do an awkard pinch of the cutlery around the mid-point and then throw them into the tray almost like a dart to avoid touching all the others that are already in there!

This is also the issue I have with the handle down method. People are savages and it's disgusting. Bet they lick their fingers afterwards as well, the dirty bastards :dread:

Depends on how sharp the cutlery is

Therefore
