Watching this Turning Red now - lovely film so far :D

Turning Red - Turning 35! Went to check why this is set in 2002, I wondered was it the 'Chinese year of the Red Panda' or was it before most Canadian kids had camera phones people could get photos of her transforming (but a small plot point is actually contingent on kids having camera phones) but according to the internet its because boybands were more relevant in 2002 than now. This made me feel old - I kind of didn't realise boybands weren't a thing anymore but I suppose they aren't. A 2022 film being set a 2002 is equivocal to a 90s Simpsons flashback episode set in the 70s, but I barely noticed anything in Turning Red that it stood out to me as being set 20 years ago. There was a kids party where DJ Casper Cha Cha Slide was in the background and didn't even register with me this was reference to it being set two decades ago - I was just like 'yup kids now would totally still be listening to this song at a tween party'.

Rocsteady wrote:I thought it was a solid 7/10. Bit more aimed solely towards kids than some of Pixar's greatest I would suggest.

I'm like 45 minutes into this at the moment and there's been drugs and underage sex references and its an allegorical film about puberty with a not at all subtle metaphors for menstruation, but yeah its not quite Wall.E or Inside Out

Yeah Turning Red definitely isn't aimed squarely at kids. Was a solid 9 if not a 10/10 for me - genuinely lovely wee film.

Definitely not aimed squarely at kids but I didn't think the writing had the depth of Pixar's best, which would put it equally in an adult category for me. Regardless of the menstruation etc pieces.

Finishing now. Really loved that.

Yeah, it doesn't reach the story telling, comical or emotional heights of Pixars best output (that is a very high standard) - but like nearly everything Pixar do it was great :D

Here’s idea how about people sort the Pixar into order of preference, like the always do in the mcu thread, so maybe some of us who are quite unsure on it can get a sense of what level of Pixar we’re on

I'd probably need to watch Turning Red again to place it properly, and there are some Pixar movies I haven't seen for almost twenty years, but from memory:

Up
Coco
Toy Story 3
Turning Red
Soul
Toy Story
Ratatouille
Incredibles
Monsters Inc.
Inside Out
Wall-E(I realise this is probably gonna be far lower than most - I just didn't take to it as much as I think I was supposed to, though admittedly I was pretty hungover when I saw it)
Monsters University
Incredibles 2
Toy Story 2
A Bug's Life
Finding Nemo
Finding Dory
Brave
Onwards
Luca (Wasn't sure where to put this - I fell asleep for a reasonable chunk of it, which doesn't say much about the film)
Cars

Not seen:

Toy Story 4
Cars 2
Cars 3
The Good Dinosaur

A few minor points about this:

- I realise that my placement of Toy Story 2 may be controversial but I stand by it. It's the weakest of the three I've seen, but it's in no way a bad movie - if anything it's a testament to how much I enjoyed the films above it on the list that it's so lowly rated.
- Also, I realise that I've rated some of the modern Pixar films like Soul and Coco very highly. I stand by this as well. Marking them all on the same criteria, I think the likes of Coco are stronger narratively and better animated than a lot of the earlier films, and I take that into account
- You'll probably see from the list that I didn't get into the Finding films or Wall-E in the same way that a lot of people did, so certainly don't take my view as gospel.
- Also, I irrationally dislike Brave. Dunno why. It's only off the bottom because I barely remember Cars and didn't feel like Onwards was a Pixar film, felt more like a 7/10 indie studio movie.
- I genuinely feel like Turning Red is a top tier movie, and it tackles a subject matter that is both really important and rarely seen in Hollywood film making. So that bumps it up quite highly for me.

Aye TR and Soul would be way lower for me (though Soul quite a bit above TR). Up and Coco are amazing though, agreed. Brave can suck a dick

A Bug's Life is higher than I assume most people would have it just because I haven't seen it in over twenty years so I'm working on the good memories of loving it as a nine year old.

I think something about Soul just really resonated with me when I saw it. I'd been plugging away at a career with absolutely no discernible reward for over a decade and I saw myself in Jamie Foxx.

Again, I don't expect my list to be anything like what others put up and it's definitely subject to change on any day ending with Y, but I feel like modern Pixar, when it works, is very underrated when compared to their older films. I actually watched Turning Red a second time earlier, which I don't often do.

Is it a Scottish thing? Is that why we hate Brave? Merida's voice in it does my box in.

For me;

S-Tier

(1)Toy Story 3, (2)Toy Story 2, (3)Wall.E, (4)Inside Out, (5)Ratatouille, (6)Soul

A-Tier
(7)Monster Inc, (8)Toy Story 4, (9)Monsters University, (10)Onward, (11)Coco, (12)Finding Nemo, (13)The Incredibles,

B-Tier

(14)Incredibles 2, (15)Luca, (16)Turning Red, (17)Finding Dory, (18)Bugs Life, (19)Up (20)Cars 3, (21)Cars, (22)Toy Story, (23)Brave

C-Tier
(24)The Good Dinosaur, (25)Cars 2 (I still quite likedit but its the film I enjoyed least and I like it the first Cars and Good Dinosaur film significantly more but for me its not a D-Tier),

D-Tier

F-Tier

Note; I like them all and B-Tier is the case of Pixar is a very high standard.

Soul is a real beauty of a film. Probably a bit weird as a kids film really but its message and heart really hit home with me.

Hah could be, the reviews weren't great for Brave in general at the time were they? Certainly not up to the usual Pixar pieces iirc

Other than the Cars films, I like all the Pixar movies. Even the Good Dinosaur isn't as bad as it's made out.
