Netflix: £8
Amazon: £8
Disney+: £5-£8?
BritBox: £6
Apple: £5
NowTV: £6.99 for entertainment, £33 for sport, £10 for movies

Even discounting the sport and movies (which would also bring the Sky/Virgin cost down), that’s £40+ per month. Add in sports and movies and it’s over £80.

Sure you can pick and choose between the services, but if you want to watch something then you either have to pay or pirate.

4.5 months after America :simper: That's one way to ensure anyone who cared about The Mandalorian doesn't pay for your service.

Personally I'm going to stick with Netflix plus one other but I guess one of the advantages of this new model is that you aren't locked in to contracts and can just pick up and drop the services as and when you want them.

When we moved into our new build in September we didn't bother with a TV package. Just got nice fast broadband instead.

Basically we looked at the channels that we actually watched and every one of them was on Freeview. Everything else was on one of the streaming services. So we booted the TV/Phone package and got a nice fast internet connection instead.

The only thing I miss about it is being able to pause/rewind live TV but you get used to that and if I really wanted I could get a Freeview box, or hook an HDD up to the TV.

But there are too many streaming services now so I'll be digging out the peg leg, strapping it on and setting sail on the seven seas in search of booty more often. :datass:

So the arguments that seem to be popping up are....

Too many services = pirating
Only one service = monopoly

What is the happy medium here?

The happy medium is content available on multiple services and you choose the one that appeals to you most based on price, reliability, devices covered, logo colour, whatever.

Lots of services isn't necessarily a bad thing, providing what is being offered is commensurate with the price being charged.

Netflix arrived at £5 per month and gave access to a great and quite wide ranging selection of movies and TV shows including those from big studios. That was a good deal.

But now the price for each service is going up and the depth, quality and variety of what each one offers individually is, in general, going down. Paying £8+ each for three services offering you not much more than one at £5 was just a few years ago does not feel like a good deal.

I'd happily pay £3 a month for Disney stuff, but I'm not sure it's worth more than that, and the same goes for the others really.

The trouble is there might be multiple streaming services but they all have a monopoly on content. Things on Netflix are not available on the others for instance. That’s fair enough for recently made content, but Disney will be locking away decades worth of stuff behind their service and not letting anybody else offer it.

A happy medium would be for the shows/movies to appear on all of the streaming services and then let us choose which service we want to pay for. In the old days (today for Jawa and Vermilion) if we wanted a DVD then we could go to HMV, a supermarket or online to buy it. Now with streaming the movie we want is only on one service, if any of them have it at all.

Competition is great, but not when it is done this way.

Three services is probably the sweet spot in terms of coverage of content and price for me. Any more than that and I'm just not willing to pay it. So that's Netflix, Amazon Prime and one other. Disney+ will probably be that third option when it launches.

I do think there will be a correction in a couple of years as half of these services shut down due to not making enough money. Especially in the US where there's even more of them.

To an extent the "old days" competition model still exists - you can go to various digital stores and purchase individual titles that you are interested in, not everything is not locked behind individual service streaming walls.

But to be fair this is becoming a far more niche market compared to streaming.

I’m hating how fractured the tv market is becoming. I’m already starting to miss out on a number of new shows on different services as I can’t keep up. Such a shame.

My current subscriptions are,
Netflix
Amazon Prime
Funimation

I'll probably add Disney+ to that. Funimation is a more specialised one compared to the others so I couldn't really count it towards a "three services" pool.

I also have a full Sky Q package, but I get that free through work (Along with Netflix being discounted to half price for the 4K tier)

Yes you can purchase the movie/TV show, but that is not comparing like for like though. In the old days you could purchase a DVD from a shop/online. But you could also rent it from Blockbusters/independent video shop.

You then also have the problem of only being able to play your purchase movie on one app. If I buy a movie on Amazon, I am restricted to Amazon Video if I want to watch it, it’s not like a DVD that would play in any DVD player, games console or computer. It is unlikely Amazon is going to go bust any time soon, but there will come a point where people lose access to purchased movies when a company goes tits up.

I sound like I am against digital media, I really am not. I love streaming and digital entertainment. And it’s not like these companies can’t share, music streaming seems to be at a point now where we are (mostly, there are exceptions) choosing the streaming company on price/service/quality and not picking the company based on content.

Apparently the first Marvel show isn't even on Disney + until late 2020. That saves me some cash.

The happy medium would mirror the successful music streaming model. Multiple services, with pretty much all the content, and the services differentiate themselves with other features.

I currently have;

Netflix
Amazon Prime

I find there is enough to watch and if I miss something on another service....well never mind.

I tend to share services with other family memebers so for instance I will get Disney+ whilst someone else pays for Netflix, someone else Amazon Prime etc...and we just share the passwords.

This can work well but most have a screen limit and are looking at other ways of clamping down on this. If you want more than 2 screens playing simultaneously on Netflix then the price jumps up quite a bit I think.
