Started watching The Mandalorian. 2 episodes in and I'm already confused.

1. When is this thing set? In the films, when Han Solo got frozen in carbonite, there was a whole room full of people there working a big machine that looked like him being dunked in a vat to get it done. Here, Boba Fett just has walk in carbonite wardrobes stacked up in his ship? Is this supposed to be much later? I've definitely read elsewhere that baby Yoda isn't actually Yoda, so I'm assuming this isn't 350ish years before the films, and there's talk about the empire, and stuff, so I'm assuming it is later than the originals, but not sure when it is besides that.

2. The show keeps taking about Mandalorians like I'm supposed to know what that means. Are they just a race of Bobba Fetts? Why can't they take off their helmets? Again, I'm sure that they did in the prequel films.

Tried googling stuff, but the top results are all articles that look like they very quickly become full of spoilers.

It's set just after Return of the Jedi.

Mandalorians are mostly characters from the Clone Wars/Rebels cartoon shows. They are basically just a race of Boba Fetts.

I can't remember why they can't take their helmets off. From what I remember their planet was destroyed by the Empire and the survivors turned into a weird cult that refused to take their helmets off.

It's five years after Return of the Jedi. That facility on Bespin - as Vader put it - was crude. Old. The technology for such would have improved - possibly even during the time of the Original Trilogy - but that one was never upgraded. As for the Mandalorians, there's a whole history behind them, but for this show all you really need to know is their civilisation is in ruins thanks to the Empire. As for why helmets can't be taken off, that's dealt with in season 2.

I'm really enjoying the Mandalorian. Just watched the 1st episode of series 2, some people have commented that S2 is a significant drop off from S1?

PS: I've always really liked The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Depends on how you feel about references to the films. The thing I appreciated about season 1 was that there was very little, suffice to say that's not the case with season 2.

I thought season 2 of The Mandalorian was better than season 1.

It's pretty good tbf. I don't think it's got the mass appeal of a lot of the big princess films, so I dunno if it's going to do as well as they're hoping, but it's good fun, and I can see them selling loads of plush Sisu's. I really want one :shifty: In terms of premier access stuff it's a lot better than Mulan, too.

I'm hoping Episode 2 of Season 2 is a low point.

Let's agree to strongly disagree.

I was excited to see it, but I'm not paying £20 for the pleasure I'm afraid.

Just started season 2 of Mando myself and ugh it's hard going at times. It still suffers massively from the basic plotting and logical sequencing issues of the first series - the actions, motivations and reactions of characters and antagonists rarely make any real logical sense and it is straight up infuriating at times! I've basically decided to give up caring about the why of anything and just try to enjoy the light show.

The internal referencing and callback porn is getting insane already though.

"Hey, remember Tatooine? Yeah that place we've been to loads already? Guess what, we're strawberry floating back there again! WOO! Oh, oh and there's Jawa's again, gotta love those Jawa's! And what trip to generic sand planet 101 would be complete without a visit from... Tusken Raiders! YEAH! And remember that thing they did where they grabbed their weapons and lifted them up and down above their heads that one time we saw them before to express their emotions? Yeah, turns out that isn't just a one-off thing, they do it ALL. THE. TIME, baby! That's right, we don't need to make any attempt to show these people as anything more than just background NPC's in a game where everyone uses the same animations constantly! Oh and the big bad monster we're fighting, yeah it's not good enough for it to be scary in its own right, it has to live in and have eaten a Sarlacc. YEAH! Remember that, the Sarlacc? That was scary right, well this thing must be scarier because it ate one!!! Oh man and I haven't even told you the best bit! Remember Bobba Fett yeah, that dude with the armour? Well in this there's a guy we're supposed to think is a Mandalorian because of his armour but it turns out it's just a regular dude wearing some armour he bought from Jawa's (remember them!?!!?) ... but it's not just any Mandolorian armour, it's strawberry floating Boba Fett's armour baby!! WOOO!!"

By the end of the first episode I was half expecting the random dude to turn around and be strawberry floating Luke of something! :fp:

This was my major problem with season 2 and it only gets worse.

You've never heard of Something? It's on Tatooine, like every other strawberry floating thing is!

With the introduction of the Fox stuff with Star this has gone from a service we almost never used to our go-to for after dinner watching. So much good stuff on there now.

We're currently rewatching the entirety of the X-files.

I enjoyed series 2 a lot, but it's a shame they felt the need to keep shrinking the universe and calling back to stuff over and over again. It lessens the character of mando to hint at Fett and Jedi, as you then stop caring about the main character so much and just want someone else to show up.

Yeah I went in forewarned that this would be the case, it's still distressing me though!
