Normal rules dictate that you stick to the left lane for driving, using only the other lanes for overtaking.

This seems to go out of the window on the M25. It is usually so busy that the signs actively tell you to stay in your lane, and there are a lot of signs on entry sliproads telling you to stay in your lane.

Generally all the lanes are rammed at all times, and the slow lane also full of lorries.

Do you think the normal lane driving rules should be ignored in the M25?

I personally try to stick to that rule where possible, depending on how quiet it is.

I'm not a driver but as a passanger I've never seen this. The way I normally see it is people speeding go in the far right lane, slow people go on the left and people use the middle lane for over and undertaking. Motorways are ridiculous.

When driving on motorways and dual carriageways in the South East normal rules dictate that you drive out in to the far right lane as soon as you get on the road.

I can be quite bad for middle lane cruising. It's a ball ache to have to move to overtake someone every 20-30 seconds if you strictly adhere to the rules while going at around 70mph.

There is one driving lane and the rest are over-taking lanes. If you're not overtaking move in a lane.

The whole reason the M25 is a gooseberry fool show isn't because there's too much traffic it's because of strawberry floaters sitting in the middle and outside lanes driving along at the exact same speed as the car inside them.

Sit in the middle lane the whole time, like a refined gentleman. Right lane is for speed demons and left lane is for slowpokes.

Always get in front of lorries, no matter what lane they're in or how fast they're going.

Drive between 5 and 7 miles per hour over the speed limit when possible so as to not look suspicious.

If a shitty little 1l hatchback tries to move out to overtake, immediately speed up to put him in his place.

Ease off the accelerator (but don't brake) if being tailgated to spook them into backing off. If they have no opportunity to overtake, continue to let your speed drop off until almost stopped.

Very few people on the face of the planet knew that the very shape of the M25 forms the sigil 'odegra' in the language of the Black Priesthood of Ancient Mu, and means: “Hail the Great Beast, Devourer of Worlds.” The thousands of motorists who daily fume their way around its serpentine lengths have the same effect as water on a prayer wheel, grinding out an endless fog of low-grade evil to pollute the metaphysical atmosphere for scores of miles around.

Listened to the unabridged audiobook ages ago and enjoyed the recent series, yes. I bring it up whenever anyone mentions the M25

Just cruised round from Junction 8 to Canterbury in a LWB White Merc Sprinter and fully embracing the van; I did what I wanted.

I think they should rip it up and stick a mono-rail there.

I also think they should rip up the whole of London and stick a nice fish reserve there.

That idea worked very well at North Haverbrook.

Driving standards on motorways just seems to be terrible anyway, barely anyone actually sticks to the left hand lane if they’ve finished overtaking. Last time I was on the M1 it was business as usual, drivers going 65 in the second lane while the first lane was clear and I was doing 70, which meant I was undertaking which of course is illegal but its a right pain having to slow down, indicate out to the 3rd lane just to overtake someone in the second lane not even going the speed limit of 70 I just ended up staying in lane. The A1 was similar the second to last time I went on it (last Sunday), the outside lane was rammed full of people going just under 70 (I was doing 65 in the left hand lane and people were barely crawling past me so they can’t have been going too much quicker) meaning anyone actually wanting to perform some overtaking and get back in lane was stuck for a few miles (ie me).

Everyone manages to drive properly on the mainland. Why do the English find it so difficult?

Overpopulation is the problem. The standard of driving in the UK is actually very good. There are just too many people and too many cars. They should change it so that until you've finished Uni and (or) got a full time job you can't drive. Obviously the 17 year old me would punch me in my face for saying that.

If you're referring to the continent, then i'm assuming you've not been to Paris.

The standard of driving there is scary (and that's not including the mopeds which zip in and out of the traffic at high speed), so much so that there's even a blue line around the arc de triomphe roundabout which indicates that if you go inside the line, you are not insured!

Can't tell if you're being satirical or not...

I've been to Paris but my comment was only about Motorway driving.
