I just got finished writing a movie 8-)

Cool!

I've started sketching some map ideas. I'm keen on having tightly-packed housing estates, and a reasonably large industrial estate. A football ground by the banks of the river is a must, as well as a dock (with the MV Ibex docked, naturally).

Fun Fact: an Ibex is a type of mountain goat. I'm calling the ship the MV Ibex. It is a boat, of goat.

It may not seem like much, but make it a tight and controlled 2 hour experience and this could be something pretty special. Go for 10+ hours and it'll either not go through to completion or be a very watered down product.

Yeah I'd say make it a two hour script, and we can have a very focused story, this'll separate it from the usual GTA stuff which has an awful lot of 'filler' around the key storyline.

I'd also suggest that the game area is kept to the size of a single housing estate, unless you just want to copy and redistribute assets directly from the GTA:SA ISO, but I'm not even sure if that's possible. 3D takes a long time to create, I've just checked and SA had over 30 3D artists, obviously they'll all have been very experienced and had several years of development time to work with too.

Even with a game with a two hour play time the script is going to need to be longer. Branching dialogue, alternate lines, context-sensitive dialogue etc.

Perhaps too subtle.

The Captain needs a role in the story. Handing out missions to Dave. With the character of the Captain being strawberry floating awesome. Also another, slightly less awesome but still fairly cool, Vice Captain. Known as "The Count". Who enjoys sailing in his canoe. The Canood.

Does anyone else have any ideas of what they'd like to see?

Worry about all this later. Create a wheel before you've built the car.

Was reading Watchmen and it got me thinking, if it's set in the 1980s there could be an undercurrent of impending nuclear war, perhaps some news articles if we're redoing any radio stations, and maybe a secret homemade bunker as an easter egg.

A cold war theme would be interesting. Mori makes a point, though. We should at least work out where to start and get some initial assets made.

Well, this seems to have fallen flat on its face. I'm going to continue working on the design concepts anyway.

I'm still working on that image, just had a lot to do in the past week, so its been slow work. Still may be a little while longer though - its the weekend and people are still giving me jobs to do :(

Don't worry, there's no particular rush.

I reckon you'd have a better chance of pulling off something along the lines of Machinima. I guess it depends on whether you want to put across a story or simply play a GTA set in a familiar location.

I think we could probably achieve both. When the time is right and we've got all the other stuff sorted, we could look at making a vote out of the best settings/ideas and go from there.
I haven't a scooby about dev'ing or modding but I can point at things and go "this!" quite well.

A little bit of both, to be totally honest.

You know what I think would be more achievable? I think we could easily get a point-and-click adventure game up and running solely through forum ability. It'd cut out the difficulty of creating something impressive in 3D when we can work in 2D. Although I'm not sure if a GTA-style story would translate to the genre.

Let me sleep on that one. I'll try to come up with a way to keep the story I want to tell and make an interesting point-and-click adventure.

Now, I think perhaps a GTA: Scouse, or GTA: Essex may have hilarious results. Perhaps GTA:Brixton even. Basically some really crappy housing estate in an area that people might actually have heard of.

You know, a delapidated shithole, with three or four fuckwits living in it. Stealing Nova's, mugging old ladies, throwing trollies into rivers and drinking cider outside the local Martins.

Perhaps there can be some really ridiculously half arsed gang war in there somewhere, all over a stolen baseball cap or something equally mundane?

It should be set in Yorkshire in the 1930s and you should be able to run over the Hovis boy on his bike in your van.
