You know, a delapidated shithole, with three or four fuckwits living in it. Stealing Nova's, mugging old ladies, throwing trollies into rivers and drinking cider outside the local Martins.

Perhaps there can be some really ridiculously half arsed gang war in there somewhere, all over a stolen baseball cap or something equally mundane?

This is kind of the reason I wanted to set it in a northern town in the 80's. The shutting of the coal mines, and the poll tax riots are two of the tings I really want to try and capture. The general anti-tory sentiment of the area at the time, and the anger, as well as the petty crime aspect. I'd love to do a delapdated town, with terraced streets with rough brickwork, litter all over the place, and industrial areas with large, sooty chimneys that are crumbling with age.

Ultimately, I'd love to capture the spirit of being a working-class citizen in such a town at the time.

There's plenty about the 80's to take the piss out of. The british motor industry, for example.

But you make your tale sound like it almost wants to take on Cal levels of seriousness, only without the buggery.

Nothing wrong with a litte seriousness. Today marks 25 years since the miner's strikes began, and it was something that destroyed certain communities. I would like to explore some of the argument behind it. Bear in mind I'm not Dan Houser, and I don't have his team of writers. I'll make funny where I can think of it, but otherwise it's going to be a pretty gritty story (I hope).

Hmm. I think it sounds, perhaps, a little...too grim. So far Rockstar has managed to set every GTA in a culturally exciting time - the music, the setting, the characateurs - everything about had a sense of dangerous fun. There was a lightness there to offset the horrible situations in which the character was placed.
But looking at this, it wouldn't surprise me if we added Joy Division to the soundtrack and the character hung himself in the end :?

I think some sort of early 90s UK could be fun - horrible tracksuits, shitty haircuts, terrible music, the end of the Gulf War and vets returning.
Off the top of my head we could make the lead character part of a football hooligan outfit - mass brawls in the street. There's the racial tension from the Steven Lawrence murder and what the police had to do with it. You've got the IRA, the release of Trainspotting (book), Steven Milligan's auto-erotic asphyxiation death, riots in Brixton, the rave scene and ecstasy etc.

I dunno, just a few ideas.

Are you seriously trying to make a game?

Well, a rather extensive mod for an existing game. Most of the framework is already there, it's just a case of manipulating it.

Not at the moment. Got a lot of other stuff on my plate, and People who've said they'd do stuff haven't yet.

I admire your enthusiasm but expecting this to happen in any serious capacity is frankly mental.

Maybe you could put together a small neighborhood map with some scripted gameplay elements and characters but it would be rugged and even that could take months and months of consistent dedication and a team of very killed or technically minded individuals, prepared for a lot to break and not work along the way, and at least 15-20 of them.

This seems to have died. It was too ambitious for a forum that quite literally couldn't pull off a piss up in a brewery.

MCN you do seem genuinely interested in the mod scene so head over to http://www.moddb.com and take a look at the crazy amount of interesting projects going on there.

http://www.moddb.com/tutorials/getting- ... -with-mods

There is some sound advice on how to organise a team to make a mod, promoting it, getting support etc. and there are a lot of members on there who have the skills necessary to make mods, amongst loads of relevant tutorials on using level editors, scripting, creating art etc. However having dabbled in mods myself (and I suppose it's worth looking to some of what I learnt from the BTEC Game Design I did at college), 3D modeling, mapping in Unreal 2.5, 3D animation, texture creation etc. - it is just so much work to create even the most mundane of things that really a mod that spans the entirety of even just a small part of a game as epic as GTA:SA is out of the scope of most independent teams of ultimately mixed, disparate people on an internet forum, no matter how skilled or passionate some individuals may be. It's not impossible, but it's one hell of a mission. The first step to a sucessful mod is being realistic and practical about the expectations of what the team can deliver, and unfortunately I think you're right; we just wouldn't be able to hold it together. If a few did stick at it, progress would likely be so slow that it would get boring fast and the project would fade away. That is what happens to 90% of mod efforts.

There are smaller games we could mod with just a few people. The easiest ones are definitely the FPS staples like Quake, Unreal etc. which come with level editors. There's even games like Braid.

I'd be up for lending some strictly rationed development time if we could get something together. I've never done a game mod, so it would take some serious time just to figure out how to go about whatever it would be, but I've been thinking about trying something in my spare time recently anyway. Just wouldn't be sure where to start.. I'd want to shoehorn some narrative in their somehow though. I recall about 18 years ago I was actually going to write a text adventure - but didn't.
