I'm trying to plug an electric instrument in to a smart phone, in the hope of recording a direct signal in an app (in this case BandLab).

Whatever I do, the phone mic keeps picking up on ambient sound. I just want it to receive a signal from the instrument and nothing else! Why does this appear to be impossible?

Can you disable the app from being able to use your microphone?

Good suggestion, thanks! Will give it a go when I get chance.

Didn't work :( the app just kicks off saying it needs permission in order to record.

The input jack on my main guitar went so I decided to have a bash at fixing it.

Not really confident in my soldering abilities, but I managed to do it after about 10 minutes of strawberry floating around with it. Basically, the ground wire snapped off the lug on the casing part. Ended up removing the hot and the ground and soldered them both back on. Wasn't really that difficult.

There was another wire in the wire housing. I've never noticed it before. I assume it must be for a stereo jack? It wasn't attached before.

Er, kind of hard to say. It could be a ground between two pots? There's no such thing as a stereo electric guitar, so it's not that.

Treated myself to a really nice guitar rack which arrived today. Splashed out ( :datass: ) on a walnut one, ive not had any sort of stand before and my guitars have always been kept in cases, so I've got some major dust anxiety at the moment. Still, it looks really nice. I'm making this corner of the room a proper music bit, so will move all my books etc in when I've put some proper shelves and that up.

Nice. Kudos on the incline in your plasterwork that is just about the right angle for all that Lego not to slide off and explode all over your guitars in one giant shower of pain.

I know what you mean about guitar cases. Guitar case on the floor using up about 20% of the available foot room, because there's nowhere else to put it down that doesn't risk it coming smashing down on top of some perfectly oriented, incredibly sharp edge that you swore you were keeping out of the way. Guitar cases that won't close unless you thread on and off the whammy bar every damn time you play it.

Soft cases for guitars that seem to move the fullcrumb/pivot point just enough that they won't stand up, so you brush past them and they fall over. Times 3, 4, 5 etc depending on however many gooseberry fool old instruments people have given up playing and left with you for extra damage.

Possibly the only thing strawberry floating worse for storing than guitars are, I don't know, double bass, grand piano (at least you dump gooseberry fool on top of it), tuba, and, well, a drum kit.

Oh Christ yeah soft cases, it's like they've been designed to somehow defy gravity and fall away from a wall they're leaning against. I got one with the Tele and Bass, because I didn't feel like spending the extra on a hard case at the time.

We've got an electronic drum kit in the other spare room, and despite being foldable it still somehow takes most of the floor space up. Probably a candidate for setting up in the loft and bringing the control box down after use (still gets too cold in winter so probably not a good idea).

That shelf is flat (It's where the pipes come.out of the airing cupboard on the other side of that wall). I'm getting a top to go on there, to then have my books on. I'll put some shelves above for my toys then.

Anyone got experience with having a short run of cds pressed for their music? I'm thinking of something like this:

https://shop.alpha-duplication.com/coll ... ipack-x-50

I can do all the artwork etc myself, so it seems like quite a.reasonable amount really. Not to sell or anything, just give to friends and family, and anyone who wants one.

I'd find an old Lightscribe DVD burner and try that first, ever heard of it? Flip disk upside down, laser activates some compound and turns it black. I might have one (3 actually come to think of it). Good luck finding compatible drivers/software. I think Nero did it.

That price is reasonable, but it would probably work out about the same per piece and you wouldn't need to sit on them for 100 years.

You can master redbook audio (CD-Audio) using something like SoundForge 10.

(I also have an A3 printer I could print and cut a bunch of inlays for you on my plotter.)

I've done tape inlays. Make your own.

She came on 6music while I was working on them. I felt inadequate.

The more cottage industry it looks, the more people pay anyway. Or the more they value it. People are almost desperate for gooseberry fool that isn't duplicated a million times.

I'm sure you can make something distinct!

I mean a stereo jack. Every guitar I've ever owned has had a mono jack input. Apparently it is a thing though. Mono jacks have two prongs, stereo jacks have 3. But I have no idea how the wiring works for it.

My accoustic has both a stereo and a mono jack.

Dammit gg stop adding to your posts after, I keep missing the additions

Thanks for the offer but I'm fine sorting my own stuff out. This is all just to give away to people anyway, I'm not trying to make money or add any value to it.

I see, I must mean typical stratocasters etc.. It might be something that allows you to use a different pickup set up by plugging a mono jack half way in, or it's just an oddity in how's it's wired. It's definitely unusual to have a guitar that outputs a stereo signal very very few mixers or interfaces are going to do anything with that signal. So it might be that the same signals are wired to both the tip and ring, and the sleeve is ground as normal - it might possibly even be a balanced wiring. I'm probably under informed in this respect.

I'd never heard of it before. But it must be a bit more common if Ad7 has an acoustic with one in it.

I'm getting the GAS again. Ordered a new pickup for my crap stratocaster rip off.

Does anyone have experience using a tablet and stylus pen to work on composition?

I'd really like to get into it myself and at the moment I'm thinking a Samsung Galaxy S tablet would do the trick.

I've not used anything like this, but I know waaaay back when I used to have an iPad 2, people swore by the garageband app as a quick way to get a song idea down. There must be an equivalent now that's readily available. Does it have to be on a tablet? Im guessing you dont have an instrument, but if you do, you can get all in one practice/demo recording units that have built in drum samples and so on.

Does anyone use 'proper' studio headsets for mixing? I've come to realise that the main headset I use for playing and recording just isn't suitable, as while it sounds great, listening to the end result on anything else means the dynamics are way off what I intended. I listened to one of my tracks on a crappy chat headset last night and it actually sounded better without the swamping of deep tones that the other headset seems to give.

Something like this, but not necessarily this: https://en-uk.sennheiser.com/hd-280-pro

About the closest thing I had to that was the Korg games on my 3DS.

I should have clarified that I'm thinking of notation for solo piano, so it's all about producing musical score rather than putting recordings/samples together.

I've not used 'proper' headphones for mixing since uni but I recall there being an inescapable difference between what you hear through them compared with what comes out of speakers, even if you have a fancy surround sound setup. I'd always have confidence in something from Sennheiser, though.

There's a plugin that bridges the gap between headphones and reference monitors, by altering the listening curve depending on the frequency response of specific, generally high end headphones. Yeah it's inescapable.

About audio production on Android, the trouble is that GOogle never really implemented a low latency audio solution in the android OS, whereas iOS integrates CoreAudio which is a very low latency driver. It's just not a priority in the OS. So the software has to work around that using delay compensation something developers I suppose can't be bothered to implement. Thus the choices on android are pretty limited.

I've never looked for a notation app but I'd be surprised if there isn't one. I guess it'd be expensive, because that's a very complex interface and visual language to present and interact with using touch. It might be easier to compose instead using a midi sequence that can then be displayed as notation, a bit like the functionality in Logic Pro?

I still have GarageBand for my iPad 2, but I've barely used it. I've never tried it with an appropriate device, but you could probably doodle with it and I do have the USB adapter that should in theory works with something like my Akai LPK20 mini keys.

Gecko, I just listened to much of your Soundcloud, great stuff!

I do 'music' too as its pretty much the only thing I find relaxing, it's basically guitar noodling, TAL-U-NO-LX (Juno 60 emulation) and pissing around in Ableton. Then when I'm done I throw it on Soundcloud and call it a day, hence the terrible production and levels being all over the place.
