PostDo You Have A Smart Meter?
by KK » Sat Jun 23, 2018 4:33 pm

I presume by now we've all been bombarded by the advertising on TV, radio and through the door by the government/energy suppliers and I was wondering how many people here have had one installed?

I haven't for two reasons: I don't believe they're safe because they're not being installed properly; and I hate how they're still locked to the one supplier. Therefore should you switch every year the meter is completely useless - a waste of time and a waste of money.

While I agree smart meters are a good way to see what is using up energy and when, it's a lie to suggest they save you money if you're already turning everything you can turn off, off.

No, not yet.
The current ones are utterly useless since they don't let you move between providers. As soon as you switch provider your Smart meter becomes a regular meter again. The version 2 meters that do let you change providers are going to be rolling out later this year I believe.

I also hate the way the e-mails from your energy suppliers try to hint that the 2020 government target is some kind of deadline and how you'll HAVE to have a Smart meter by then whether you want it or not.

If you don't the government have permission to bulldoze your house and make you live under a bridge :capnscotty: .

I don't have one installed and already have my bridge preference all set.

Yes but because it was put in by a different supplier than i an with it doesn't work as a smart meter because they aren't supplier agnostic in gen 1 making the whole thing a waste of strawberry floating money.

No, apparently because we have storage heaters in a couple of rooms.

Nope can't see the point I know what energy I'm using around the house at any point of the day if I want to save energy I'll turn off more items when not needed and I also know which items use the most so they can be off or only used when needed. This probably helps being an Electrician.
As for them being installed incorrectly I have seen the meter monkey's do some absolute horrors.

As for the meters knowing what items are being used is pretty BS especially around your average house.

It’s mental that the first generation of them were not set up to allow people to change suppliers. Dumb strawberry floats. :fp:

We have one. The backlight was annoying so we haven't had the screen switched on since about day three...

Yup, it is no doubt part of the rise in prices because someone has to pay for the strawberry floating things and the suppliers aren't going paid for it so it will be lumped into the cost of electric so the cost of fitting the things and then changing them all just falls to everyone.

No. I'm not fussed about it but the wife doesn't want one. I don't care as to why so I haven't asked.

No not yet. I'm unsure whether to get one but my energy supplier hasn't yet offered me one.

The graphics/display are very crude and basic from the ones I’ve seen as well. They look like an early 00s multifunction weather station (the type of thing you’d see given away by Readers Digest or SunLife) that never seemed to correctly gauge the weather either.

There have been cases where it sends inaccurate information and you end up with a large bill (this will be refunded but obviously it's a hassle that shouldn't happen) and as others have said there's problems with switching suppliers.

I do, and I love it. I love being able to see exactly what I'm using and when.

I bet it doesn't happen nearly as often as an inaccurate self-read by the customer. When I worked for EDF, I used to get at least one of those per day.

The biggest issue I've seen with them is that they tend to be fitted by poorly trained people in a hurry and you end up with bad wiring or gas leaks far more regularly than should be happening because companies are hiring just about anyone to install them.

I've also heard more than one account of boilers suddenly ceasing to work after a Smart Meter install and the energy companies/contractor who fitted the meter completely denying any and all responsibility leaving people with a non-working boiler and a bill to repair/replace it themselves.
