It's ever present at the moment, but does anyone like it?

Does it devalue the hero of a story knowing if they die there is a replacement with longer hair out there?

Best example of the Multivere?

Worst example?

Please be careful not to spoil something that isn't obviously a multiverse.

Wish my image sig would work

I wouldn't say I liked it or disliked it. It's kinda strawberry floating the MCU up at the moment but also Spiderverse is brilliant.

Unfortunately I can't really say one of my favourite uses of the multiverse because it would be a huge spoiler if you ever did watch the film.

There's no real answer to this question as it would all depend on what movie/game we're talking about and how well it works for the story.

It only exists to placate geeks who demand “logical” continuity.

Kind of? My favourite Marvel imprint was the 2099 universe introduced in the early 90s. I enjoyed it because it was (largely) kept separate from the mainline universe though. I'm not really a fan of the Spider-Man 2099 stuff that crosses over with modern Spider-Man, it just doesn't work for me.

I think my favourite alternate universes are the ones where the settings have large differences to the mainline universe. 2099, 5 Ronin, the Marvel Noir comics, Marvel 1602, Spider-Man India. I also think some characters suit alternate reality storylines better than others when it comes to crossovers. I enjoyed the first Spiderverse film but mostly prefer my Spider-Man stories not to lean into dimension hopping territory

No real opinion on it but it can be cool like how Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden and Nioh (and Halo too I suppose) are all set in a shared universe.

EDIT: Wait, I think I might have misunderstood the question

I honestly can't think of much that I've consumed media wise that uses multiverse theory. Spiderverse was great, and it's obviously pretty central to that, but it was also pretty central to Bioshock Infinite, and that turned out to be a bit gooseberry fool, so I don't think it's the concept of a multiverse that's the problem, but more likely just bad storytelling in general.

I voted no in the poll, because I hadn't read the opening post, and had initially assumed this was about extended universes like the marvel franchise, so knock one off no and add it to depends, I guess.

Not sure if shared and multi-universe are the same thing. But one of the few 'wow' genuinely joyful and excited cinematic moments for me was in the M.Night film split when David from Unbreakable pops up and references Mr Glass setting up Glass.

M. Night is one of my favourites and that scene gave me goosebumps. I enjoyed the film glass too

I'm curious, would you mind saying and spoiling tagging please? Obviously I accept all responsibility if I get a film spoilt for me.

It's a no from me in general, I feel that they tend to remove any stakes or tension, because as you said if a big character dies it doesn't matter because they can just wave the multiverse wand and it's all been fixed.

A multiverse story by itself can be as good as any other story but generally when it comes to multiverses within franchises I think they exist mainly to keep nerds from moving on to something else.

Assuming we are talking about comic book movies/TV, then it doesn't matter if there's a multiverse or not. They can always just say "and then the hero came back to life because of the power of the MacGuffin we introduced 5 minutes ago".

I voted No, but I probably shouldn't have voted at all. My opinion is pretty redundant since comic book/superhero content stopped being my thing a long, long time ago.

From the outside looking in, it does appear to be a mechanism for continuing a franchise for the sake of it, since there are no other places to go any more. Hollywood desperately needs some new original entertainment IPs. I guess that's riskier though.

Sure, it is a low budget 2013 film called Coherencethat is very well done. I believe it's on Prime (or at least it was while I watched it) and while it is better going in knowing absolute nothing, I'd still recommend giving it a watch because it's very well done.

I love it - I love having the ability to have different takes on characters and have it possible for them to team up.

I also love the idea of their being parallel earths and stuff where stuff is completely different. It's part of why I love Rick and Morty as well.
