I fall between options 2 and 3 but went for option 2 as that is where I am today.

I was talking to a colleague earlier and the job/industry I'm in feels like we are on a hamster wheel. It's always spinning, sometimes it's 90 mph and other times it's 10mph but it's always the same type of stuff.

If I could quit tomorrow and live the easy life I would but I need money so I can enjoy my freedom.

My ideal job would be a postman but that means a significant pay cut and they only offer part time hours.

It sort of changes depending on the project. At the moment I'm a bit sidelined so I find work quite boring so I'm in the second category when I'm in a better project where I'm more involved I move up to the first category.

Although I'm on an AWS course at the moment which is pretty cool.

I don't mind it because I like most of the people and I get to make a lot of the rules, so everything is very much relaxed and our only stressful priority is lynching Wolf Scum.

If I won the lottery (that I don't play) then absolutely I would be off without a second thought, although I'd work until they recruited a replacement, so as not to screw them over.

I used to feel like that, now they wouldn't even know where I went, I'd just be gone

Outrunner wrote:No. I hate it. While it's not caused my mental health problems it has 100% made them worse. I've been bullied by a manager for years and dealing with the general public has ground me down. So why stay in it for so long? Partly the security, I am terrible at interviews and no amount of coaching has changed that. As bad as it is I've always been scared of leaving and ending up somewhere worse. Also, as bad as it is, I do have friends there. They may only be work friends (I don't really do much outside of work with them) the idea of leaving for pastures new and having nobody and being even more isolated than I am now was terrifying. So I ended up stuck in a job that was toxic to my mental health by my own mental health problems.

All that being said, things came to a head a few years ago. My bullying boss got worse (armed with the info she gained with a meeting my mental health nurse. She turned a meeting that was supposed to help her understand my mental health problems and how to support me and somehow managed to turn everything she learned into a weapon to use against me and manipulate me) and I was often going into work crying and thinking how to easy it would be to just step into traffic. I'm now at university but I have kept a Saturday shift on at work. It has the benefits of being a regular wage, I have zero contact with the manager that made my life a living hell and I still get to see my friends. I still hate the job itself but this way I've been able to 'leave' on my own terms. Hopefully I have a year studying abroad next year so will be finally handing my notice in properly. I have a lot of potential ideas for what I want to do post university and finally feel like I have a future.

The real shame of it all, is that the job I am in, the one that has caused me so many problems, was, at one point, my dream job. Once I leave I will never ever work in this sector again. I'm looking forward to my exit interview.

It sounds like you've endured a horrible experience but that things are much brighter now, which is great. :D It's a shame that your former job was once a dream job, but do you think one of the other potential ideas for jobs you have considered for after university, might end up being even dreamier?

I am off work at the moment, and have been since August, but generally:

- Current role is in performance analysis. It's a 7/10 for me, used to be higher but I was asked to take ownership of a lot of stuff I didn't know a great deal about or have any interest in, which moved me away from some aspects I enjoyed.

- Existing team is great, management is good, company as a whole is so-so from the perspective of the employee, for the last couple of years they've actually focused on upskilling existing employees to prep them for climbing the ladder.

- It isn't what I want to do long-term and for the past year I've been studying to qualify as a project manager (now completed), which is what I want to move into ASAP.

I have a job I usually find interesting. I'm lucky to be able to say that, so I try not to take it for granted. However, I work alone most of the time. I find that can be stressful, and often it feels isolating - especially over the last 18 months. I don't really have the fortitude for taking on whole projects solo, and at the moment I'm definitely underperforming because of anxiety.

I think a realistic goal for the future is moving to a similar job but in a larger team. I think interacting with more people, and being a smaller part of a larger effort, would be a lot better for my state of mind. I could also look to jump into something totally different, but then the degree of change might be a bit scary.

If I didn't have to work (as much or at all) then I'd be excited to spend more time on hobbies and being creative. I think it's similar for a lot of people here. I'd like to write, draw, and travel more, and (obviously) play more video games. I expect I'll always be a bit too busy and tired from working full-time, though.

Yeah, its good. I've been in and out of hospital so others have picked up my workload to the point where I'm not involved.
I'm due more hospital time so I won't be up to much before Christmas. Gives me time to reassess my work/life balance.

I'm happier with work now than at any other time in an almost-30 year career. Working from home has been a god-send, and a huge positive from the pandemic. Just getting rid of the commute has done wonders for my mental health.

I hate it. There's always more bad days then good and every day, it's a struggle to get the motivation. I'm a relatively calm and chilled person and am a Manager, so have to shoulder responsibility quite a lot but it often feels like every colleague just throws their stresses on me constantly. Whether its not completing their jobs, having a bitch about someone else or just ignoring a problem and waiting for me to deal with it. Sometimes I feel like the only competent manager and am doing the leg work in nearly all situations.

I've tried for almost three years to stop this but it keeps falling back on me and sometimes its faster if I just do the task.

I like the role but don’t like the product, so I’m not particularly enthused about my work. I really like the salary and benefits though so that’s enough to keep me chugging away.

I’d love to be somewhere where I’m passionate about the business. That’d be the dream, but I’m fine.

Thanks! I always knew it was bad while I was going through it, it's only now when I look back that I think "Why didn't I just leave?". Nothing I can do about that now, I'm concentrating on the here and now and the future. I still have issues but overall I'm happier than I've been in years. And I can absolutely see whatever I do in the future being dreamier. Plan 'A' would be to work as a tour guide in Asia but I do have a lot of backup plans that I would be equally happy doing. Returning to education was the best decision I've made in years :D

Really upsetting to read about how many of you guys are unhappy.

For anyone who is actively ready to pursue a change whether in their current industry or elsewhere, PM me and I'll make time to see if I can be of support. I worked for six years as a recruiter and headhunter and have supported many friends/family/acquaintances take steps up in their career (including a handful of people from GR over the years).

Looking at the poll I think we're doing better than the average population.

Edit actually we're close to the normal distribution.

I've always hated working, but at the same time I like money in my pocket without struggling to make ends meet.

I'm pretty much left to my own devices in my current job so as far as jobs go it's not too bad. The pay, all things considered, isnt terrible either. That said, given the choice to sit at home all day and do what I want to do while being financially secure I'd quit tomorrow.

I work to live. I don't understand this living to work malarkey.

I am the opposite, I like the company I work for and for the most part they are decent - and I absolutely love the products that our division makes/provides

The worst part for me is that my job is so tedious, I provide the same training courses every other week and I have reached a point where I can't learn anything more from the role.
I work pretty much 3 days a week, so I have time to perhaps learn some other skills, but I find I learn best when I am doing/involved with the work (not just reading / online learning)

Long story short, it is good money, but strawberry floating BORAN!

Good money and 3 day weeks? You've nailed it m8.

I'm between 2 and 3 on the scale, though answered 2. It's not bad most of the time but comes with spikes of very high stress from demanding clients. Wfh and good money balance it out.
