Yeah the best I was ever paid was in creative services (digital design) for venture capital backed preparatory course provider for foreign students, but owing to autism difficulties and people being gooseberry fool in general as well as having an unrealistically high standard of work I insist upon anyway, I lasted about 3 weeks before they decided they wanted someone worse or a lone wolf to gooseberry fool out whatever higher ups didn't want to do.

I'll never be ashamed or getting shot of because I worked too hard or the working conditions were plain inhospitable. I got started in business because I think of the bigger picture and I struggle to deal with irreconcilably bad policies and behaviours, I just see it in everything and it's exhausting.

If I am going to think that way which is a skill then I want to be empowered to fix things. I can also manifest various strategies to straight up avoid working with bellends.

I love my job (unit manager in a care home). I'd like some pressure to be eased but overall I'm content. Ive got enough autonomy to make my own choices and run with them, something that bodes well for promotion when I'm ready for that. I get lots of satisfaction from my residents, seeing folk smile absolutely makes my day and my staff team are generally very good and seem to like me as as a manager. I don't forget what it's like to be in their shoes and muck in when it's needed. My managers are great, knowledgeable and supportive. And my income makes for comfortable living. I feel like I can genuinely make a difference with my residents and staff. If it makes people happy, I'll make it happen.

Want to facetime your kids before they go to bed at 7pm? Go for it, 5 minutes off the floor is worth having happy staff. Want to take overtime but travelling to and from four 13 hour shifts too much? I'll get you a taxi on accounts to make sure you're well rested enough to bail us out a shortfall. Resident unwell and off their food but asked for a chippy? Absolutely! If it boosts their calories today. I love that my flexible approach is being used by others and we'll received. I've also had my experience from elsewhere honoured and brought in to action which makes me feel respected in my role.very tough job but very worth it.

I just got promoted so yeah, I do. I spent three and a half years in my old role (business analyst for a container terminal - being subject matter expert in container volumes, services, throughputs, reporting, terminal operations etc etc) and loved that. I sort of 'click' with it in a way where it makes sense intrinsically, and I find it interesting to research and understand in my own time. But I was getting to the point where I'd sort of hit the limit of what I could realistically achieve in that role and was ready for something new.

The timing was pretty good because at the start of this year a new director was added to the exec team who was scoping out if people would want to join his team, so I made it clear that I'd be looking to step up. He created a senior commercial analyst role where I'd be looking not just at my local terminal but also at the rest of the UK ports and start to build understanding of the inland activity too (trains and cargo owners etc), as well developing new skills by getting a direct report to work for me and other components that will come as we build the role. It's pretty nice because I get to keep the elements of my old role that I really enjoyed, but also get to define a bunch of stuff we haven't really looked at properly before.

I had another offer while this was going on as my then manager was recruiting a role to look after the IT software and Systems which the terminal runs on, but going in that direction didn't speak to me much long term (too inward looking) whereas the progression from the job I took can be very easily transferred across the industry. I've only been in the new role since 1st Oct but seems to be going very well so far - enjoying the change of direction tbh.

I really enjoy my work. I have a great boss who values my input on projects and is very understanding when it comes to having to be flexible around childcare.

I get to help students with their lab projects, build all sorts of test rigs and experiments from scratch for research purposes and destroy as much as I build for testing purposes.

My University offers a generous holiday package of mandatory closures as well as 2 weeks overtime giving me 7 weeks leave plus a further 2 weeks of extra bank holidays and a week's closure at Christmas.

I know this isn't a mental health forum, but sometimes the stress and culture of my work make me feel suicidal

Mate, please please please do something to get help or change your situation rather than feel that way. Speak to somebody. Get a new job.

We have a thread for depression/mental health, the people that post in there will be able to give you advice and understanding. t:depression?f=7

Basically what Moggy said. Seek advice from your GP, Samaritans, etc.

No job is worth you feeling that way. Even if you can't change your job you may be able to work with your employer to find solutions to reduce your stress. This obviously depends on how receptive your employer is to mental health concerns, which is why speaking to an external MH person as outlined above in the first instance may help. What field are you in?

Best of luck mate, we're all here for you :)

I've had jobs like that. Feel free to chat about it on here. There's a mental health thread knocking about here. Might help.

I do not like my job. The people there are great though. If they weren't great, I'd have been gone long ago.

How easy is it for you to move?

While i didn't feel suicidal my previous job had a really bad impact on my mental health and relationship. I changed job and my life is significantly better.

Definitely consider your options. No job is worth feeling like that for.

Thanks for your support guys - I really appreciate it. I'm in the process of considering my options, the detrimental effect its having on my mental health isn't sustainable much longer.

Hey Barnsy, you should definitely call your GP too mate - not an either/or to considering your work options, and it will ultimately help you to reach a better place. There's no right or wrong thing to tell a GP, just be honest with them and they will be able to start some support.

Hey, I wanted to quickly say thanks as I did actually follow your advice - I booked a doctors appointment. I haven't had any contact with any doctor for years and was very reluctant to make an appointment for non-covid; depression / mental health reasons during Covid and made it very clear it isn't urgent and can wait - but they got me a phone appointment for this afternoon.
