I used to have Alice in Wonderland syndrome* when I was little. Was really difficult to sleep and used to get upset because it really messes with your head.

*I didn't know what it was at the time but self diagnosed myself recently after hearing about AWS

AIWS has always fascinated me. What age did you stop getting the visual symptoms?

I have had the visual hallucinations a few times (things looking small or distant), usually when I've been ill with various things (Scarlet Fever and Tonsilitis being two memorable cases).

Who needs drugs when your brain does things like that by itself.

Definitely no later than 10 years old because we moved house then and I don't remember having symptoms in the house we moved to.

Your house was just haunted by a poltergeist.

Well bloody hell I didn't realise that was an actual thing. Very rarely I'll get it when talking to someone where the scale seems to change and they're much bigger and the background appears flat.

After a spell of nothing major, I thought I might have shaken this. But nope, last night there was a guy sat beside me when I woke up. He was crouched down and was right up close to my face. Somewhat strangely, his head looked both real, but massive like Frank sidebottom

But you return to me at night just when I think I may have fallen asleep
Your face is up against mine, and I'm too terrified to speak

It's really not nice due to how real it is. If it was just some abstract shape or something, at least you'd be able to dismiss it pretty quickly. Many a time, especially recently, ive seen some warping shape and been able to tell I was hallucinating and there's nothing really moving around. These though are actual people in my house, in my room, walking about and waking me up.

Sounds like you need some drugs, or to stop taking them

I awoke the other night to see and extremely tall woman (as high as the room) stood in the bedroom doorway. I knew it wasn't real, so I sat up and focused, except this time it didn't go away. I then got out of bed, shouted for her to strawberry float off, still there, I then walked forward and did a proper kick which just did nothing of course, and it only went away when I was nearly in the same space.

These hallucination stories scare the ever living bejesus out of me tbh.

You should have ploughed her and worried about the haunting technicalities later.

It really is awful. I think the fact that these just look like normal people, albeit with some strangeness, makes it a lot more scary. If it was some crazy monster I think it'd be easier to just accept it's not real straight away, but having what looks like a real person stood in the room is scary because it easily could be a burglar or something :dread:

One day, we'll hear the story of the "brave" man who just walked straight up, berated and then booted a burglar down the stairs.

The vivid, terrifying description of the otherworldly burglar will make the police sketch artist quit on the spot.

I'm sure being half asleep and also terrified (at least I would be I imagine) makes it difficult but I wonder how your brain would handle it if you tried to look at the hallucination through the camera on your phone, or in a mirror. Would that work as a trick for reassuring yourself they're not real (and getting rid of them)? A bit like the standard tricks for checking if you are lucid dreaming like toggling a light switch or trying to read, when I've done those before the realisation of being in a dream usually wakes me up.

Had a good one last night (context).

Woke up facing the wall, to see a young man crouched beside the bed, looking in to the corner of the room. As I sat up he turned to look at me, and I then proceed to swing punches at him (thankfully far enough back to not hit the wall). When he survived these punches, I lunged off the bed and grabbed him, actually grabbed a person. Shook him by the shoulders, heard a noise, then snapped out it and sat back on the edge of the bed (the guy disappeared).

How could I have actually grabbed him? Was he real? I went back to sleep.

Wake up this morning to realise I've actually grabbed the chest of drawers that's there and shaken it so much the the stuff on top of it has gone everywhere :fp:

Some guy in an orange jacket was in the room last night, really really real to me when I woke up. It was strawberry floating terrifying, so I sat up and started throwing punches as hard as I could but of course there was nobody there. My arms ache today now due to how hard I was (context) punching.
