I have the odd cigar on special occasions and I social smoke now and then, when with friends who are smokers. People have always told me I'll still get addicted but given I've been doing that for 5 years and can happily take them or leave them I say those people are wrong, the only time I've had one sober is after hearing a mate had died in an accident and it helped calm my nerves. I've smoked weed a couple of times but only when available, and thats much less frequently than normal cigs.

Main thing is I'd never go out and buy my own (except in the case of cigars).

I don't have to smoke to know what it does, I like my drugs to have a bit more of a kick to them.

Nope, and I can't really stand being around people who do, even after they're done smoking that lingering smell makes my throat feel soar.

My favourite warning on a packet of cigarettes is

'smokers die a slow and painful death'

I had a friend who was a social smoker, i.e we would go out drinking and then he would smoke all my fags. He never bought any. So it got to the point I would buy ever stronger cigs (malboro, camels, camel untipped, galoise and eventually woodbines) hoping he would cough up a lung or buy his own. Never happened.

It is this attitude of social smokers that I hate. They believe that since they haven't bought any fags they aren't technically smokers and can carry on the holier than thou attitude. Buy your own fags and admit you are a smoker. Do social drinkers get away with drinking someone else's beer?

Or the social junkie, who isn't really a junkie as he doesn't have his own kit but shares his real junkie mate's kit when they are in a skag den.

Plus non smokers, you forced us out of pubs so you wouldn't have to breathe our fumes, so why do you now follow us outside and talk to us when we are having a fag? Your job is to look after my coat and get the beers.

There's only ever been one time where i've thought "I want a cigarette" while I was sober, and that was after a Slayer gig so I was feeling a bit mental and wanted to calm down.

I smoke the VERY odd cigarette while drunk though, it just doesn't seem to do anything for me. But i'll happily get stoned... so I guess I do smoke, yeah.

Hah, I suppose I'm one of these social smokers OnlyShallow talks about in that I only usually smoke when I'm out these days, but to be fair I don't have a holier than thou attitude at all and I do buy my own should I wish to smoke. I used to smoke more often back when I was in uni and living with other smokers but I'm at home right now so its not an option unless I want my dad to stove my head in. Actually thinking about it I haven't smoked in about two months. I'd quite like one now.

Although at first I was against it, I think I now approve of the ban. Its harder for militant non-smokers to moan and also I find it a good pulling aid. Leaving a club for a fag more or less leaves a five minute window in which people have nothing to do but to talk and pose, and girls are mostly more than happy to indulge a stranger with conversation.

That will be someone giving you a hint to buy your own by giving you a fag from their "social smoker emergency pack" of weird turkish fag that appears to be made of twigs and moss that someone brought back from Benedorm in duty free cause they only cost 15p for 1000.

Excellent smoke those fags.

I used to be a 'proper' smoker. Not any more though. However, I do usually have a packet of cigs around, sometimes I like to have one with a glass of wine after dinner. It's nice.

I much prefer it this way, if I only have the odd one it's much better when I do smoke. I don't get uptight about it either, like some people who do what I do and turn round and say 'I don't smoke. Well, just the odd one'. As it means you're BIG FAT LIAR saying you don't smoke. So, yeah I do, but only occasionally and it's all the more enjoyable for it. I try to be very considerate about it too, as I know full well the smell of someone who's just had a cigarette (sitting next to you at work for instance) is pretty horrid.

The smoking ban is brilliant by the way. Getting to go outside on a night out for some fresh air is ace, and it's really sociable too. The only time I wish you could still smoke inside is when you're somewhere that stinks of stale beer and sweat. I'd take smoky over that to be honest. But I guess it's not as bad for your health.

I used to smoke cigarettes casually, when I was a teenage muppet. But I gave it up after a few years as it was a bit pointless. I still smoke weed every now and then though, it's much more worth the money. Cigarettes just never seemed to do anything useful or enjoyable, just the small rush of doing something "naughty".

No, I don't smoke. The smell of it is absolutely awful, hence I am very glad it has been banned from UK pubs and restaurants. :D

I haven't had a cigarette since Feb 2004.

And giving up remains the hardest thing I have ever done. Four years later, I still get occasionally (and quite overwhelming) cravings.

Ah, the regular smoking thread. Hadn't seem them for a while back on GR.

My first thought was also that this thread was going to end in a bitter fight but then, on the other hand, I haven't seen the most fanatic anti-smoker, Kiran, here.

Started smoking when I was 12, 13. Quitted about 12 years later, shortly after meeting my boyfriend. Then, when I moved in with him (a big, and stressful step) I started to smoke occasionally and also started 'social-smoking'.

Unlike other 'social-smokers', I did feel guilty about asking others for cigarettes all the time. I started buying (and smoking) cigarillos (small cigars) as I thought they were more suitable for occasional smoking. But occasional turned into regular again. And even though, in the end, I didn't smoke more than 2 cigarillos a day (well, a little more when I was on holiday) I didn't like the fact that it grew into a habit again so I quit and on 2nd September I will not have smoked for 2 years and 3 months.

This. Never smoked and never will do, I'm far too into sport to bother with such a nasty habit.

I smoke socially. HOWEVER: I have my own packet of tobacco at the moment. I won't buy any more when I finish this though.
