I think you underestimate how lazy the majority of us all are. It was an effort just to type that out. And that.

That's what I mean though, I my view when I'm already on the keyboard the effort to type ": l o l :" is far less than to switch to the mouse, locate and click the lol face and then switch back to the keyboard.

That would explain a lot.

I knew someone who had a seriously broken keyboard where a good 30% of the keys just didn't work and they still wouldn't replace it. He used to basically type the missing keys by copying and pasting them either from someone else on the application they were already using or by getting the Character Map up and finding the letter in there!

I generally use the buttons, particularly for formatting, as I browse on my phone and it takes about 18 key presses just to type out the bloody italics code.

I'll usually type smilies, but I can only remember a handful, so I have to use the buttons for the rest.

I use an onscreen keyboard and its still often easier to type out BBcode than click the buttons, also things like the URL button still require additional typing to do proper llnks:
