I actually think they give a warning when the call starts, but I like to imagine they all just stop talking mid-sentence

I think I was in the shower for the 2 minutes silence. Usually I'm asleep so it's kind of an improvement.

In 2011, I passed my theory test on 11/11 (11/11/11!), came out of the test centre, got into the car, said to my dad with glee "I passed!" and he just stared at me with his fingers to his lips.
Felt like a right bastard for being chuffed

In the contact centre I work at, we told customers we'd call them back after the silence, then all set our phones to "busy".

I'll be honest I had the morning off, didn't realise what date it was and spent the morning perfecting songs on Rock Band. I think I was probably singing That Smell by Lynyrd Skynyrd at that time.

What's nonsense about help for heroes?
My issue with Help for Heroes is that it seems to give the army and the government a bit of a free pass with regards supporting ex-service personnel. We really shouldn't need charities to be filling in gaps in funding or support.
You're right in that we shouldn't need charities, but the alternative is to simply allow the government to not support wounded veterans.
Bashing a charity that does genuinely good work because you've attached a nationalist sentiment to it is pretty horrible. They may not all fit your personal definition of a hero, still, but they're all people who've been injured in employment by the state, and like it or not, that means on behalf of all of us. I'm glad something like Help For Heroes does exist, to support those the government has failed to, and the funding of medical advances that have come with treating and rehabilitating those with amputations and burns, extends to benefit everyone who is affected by these things, including civilians.

Fifa has fined all four home nations for displaying poppies during World Cup qualifiers around Armistice Day.
England and Scotland players wore armbands featuring the symbol when they met at Wembley on 11 November.
Wales and Northern Ireland's respective games featured displays on the pitch or in the stands to mark the event.
England have been fined 45,000 Swiss francs (£35,311), Scotland and Wales 20,000 Sfr (£15,694) and Northern Ireland 15,000 Sfr (£11,770).
Fifa disciplinary committee chairman Claudio Sulser said he "fully respected" the commemorations but stressed the rules "need to be applied to all member associations".
"The display, among others, of any political or religious symbol is strictly prohibited," he added.
"In the stadium and on the pitch, there is only room for sport, nothing else."

From reading FIFA's statement on this ruling it would suggest that to have a minutes silence for the death of a political figure would also be against the rules. Wearing black armbands to mark the occasion, photos of the figure at the stadium etc. Surely this has happened multiple times in the past?
Nelson Mandela springs to mind.

Our FA got fined also for having 1916 (the year we got most of you lot out!
) on our shirts which is fair enough.
