There was a poppy stall when i was in town today, there's actually some really nice items on sale too, i bought a neat little pin badge.

That said though, the poppy/anti-poppy fascists can all sod off as far as i'm concerned, everything seems to get hijacked by morons these days and the poppy appeal is no exception.

That opinion piece bounces around quite a lot; it's seems to be quite a mixture of things / groups that have stopped his desire to wear a poppy. He mentions Brexit six times (plus uses the phrase "gammon") and, regardless of opinions on that issue, I wonder what it has got to do with the Poppy Fund? The guy states "They are pushing some of us away from the poppy – and harming the British Legion’s invaluable work by reducing its funding." I, too, dislike the goal of some folk in seeking to prove "look how much I care"... but, if he feels the funding and work is "invaluable", I feel that he'd be better off challenging those folk rather than stopping visibly supporting it.

But, hey, it's his choice and you gotta respect peoples desires on this front.

It's a day for old people, old people are overwhelmingly religious.

I would like to see a new national anthem that reflects our secular and multicultural society at some point in the future though rather than the current one that reflects our imperial sectarian past.

Nick, you appear to be unaware of the meaning of the remembrance service. The event arose from World War I but it evolved to be a form of recognition and remembrance for those who have died or been otherwise impacted by war; whether that was one hundred years ago or yesterday. It is certainly not "a day for old people".

The vast majority of war veterans in this country are elderly and are overwhelmingly Christian. It'll be different in decades to come due to declining religiousity and only 10% of young people in the UK identifying themselves as Christian.
