PostDo you work hard?
by Jenuall » Fri Oct 04, 2019 2:46 pm

My wife has been having a very busy time in work at the moment. She's a teacher and so her day is pretty full on at the best of times, but right now it's even more stressful than usual for all sorts of reasons - office politics, union stuff, special educational needs matters, social services, police - basically there is all sorts of gooseberry fool going down and so she's really having to work harder than ever at the moment. Late nights, difficult days etc.

I'm a little bit the other way at present - what I'm doing is very stable, I rarely have to do anything outside of the 9-5 working day so my home time is all for me, my work in the office is technically and mentally challenging but not exactly physically hard or stressful - there are some crunch periods and there are fairly regular important meetings and presentations that I have to do which add some fun to the mix, but overall it's stuff that I can handle without needing to engage some kind of extra gear of effort.

This all got me thinking about how hard different people work, how much effort people have to go to in order to be where they are, how fair the renumeration for those efforts are etc. and I'd be interested to see what others think about this whole area.

I earn more than my wife even though right now she objectively works harder than I do. Her job requires more time and effort, results in more stress, involves more physical demands and so on. That's not to say that my job is a piece of piss in comparison, and I like to think that I've worked bloody hard to get to the position I am in now, but if you were to boil it down to what each person is doing in a day of work right now it's hard to argue that I'm working harder. Similarly there are plenty of people I encounter during the day or who I benefit from in some way that it's hard to do anything other than acknowledge the fact that they are working harder than I am in some capacity - be that physical effort, hours worked, mental stress etc.

Now you can say that the level of training or need for specific knowledge or skills in one job may re-balance things somewhat where comparing situations like this, but there are plenty of jobs out there that need more skill, knowledge, aptitude and dedication than others and yet still aren't as lucrative or rewarding.

So what do others think about their position in the working world? Do you work hard? Do you think you are fairly treated and paid for what you do? Do you enjoy what you do and are happy with both the effort it takes and the pay you get? Do you hate what you do and therefore don't care about working hard? Would you work harder if you were doing something else?

Not really, I have busy times but Im home every evening by 6. Always been this way really, Ive worked with people who always do 12 hour days and think nothing of working weekends but its never expected people will do this and I cant say Ive ever felt pressured into doing anything like that. I have my work to do and once it gets done noone relaly gives out.

Generally, the harder you work, the less you get paid

Depends on the day and what I’m doing.

Some days I’m working flat out solving some problem in code for a new web app or dashboard or whatever, other days I’m doing more “normal” it support and so aren’t really thinking or particularly trying very hard.

I think there must be a point of diminshing returns in terms of extra effort and whether it gets you extra pay.

Not working hard enough can also result in you getting paid less - or even nothing if you really push your luck. So basically you can't win!

I largely do the square root of strawberry float all every day. If I had things to do, I would do them, but I don't, so I don't. I'm not going to be my own boss and tell myself to make stuff up and do it. That's not my job.

I definitely work hard when I have to, but when I can get away with reducing effort I also definitely do that.

Definitely not as hard as I should, but I somehow keep getting away with it.

No.

I hate work. I don't get paid enough for the time I put in. You will not meet a lazier man than I.

It just swimming against a tide of shite. Can't get anything done because you constantly get issues thrown at you.

Maybe you don't get paid more because you're strawberry floating lazy and not worth the money they're already paying you?

I'm definitely not worth the money they pay me kek. But I'm not looking to earn more money. I don't need that much to be happy. I'd rather more time.
