It's a minefield trying to keep up with my rewatch and avoiding spoilers for the new stuff.
Anyway Matt Smith has been and gone and we're three episodes into Capaldi.
Smith was excellent. Really loved him by the end. He had a really fantastic way of going from his slightly wacky persona to his more serious moments where he genuinely feels like an ancient being. He really manages to capture that world weary oldness at time. Like he looks young, but you can tell he's been around for a very long time. Wonderful actor.
Still think Season 7 would have been better with Amy and Rory all the way through but Clara has grown on me a bit more this time around.
I don't hate her like I did originally.
Not sure I'd go as far as to say I like her, but she's not quite as bad as I remember.
The specials were great too. The short 8-minute "Night of the Doctor" was as fantastic as I remember. We never got enough McGann.
I'm hoping the rumours of a spin-off for him are true. Seeing his stories while the Time War rages in the background would be so good.
Capaldi is strawberry floating great though.
His first two episodes were great, then Robot of Sherwood.... I remember thinking that episode was trash the first time I watched it. So I was pleasantly surprised to find myself quite enjoying it.
At least up until they fire the Golden Arrow at the escaping ship so that is has enough gold to escape somehow.
Thought it was one of the most bullshit, pulled out of nowhere dumb solutions I've ever seen.
It was obvious that the arrow would be important, but I fail to see how plonking the arrow into the side of the spaceship was supposed to make it suddenly fly better. Made absolutely no sense whatsoever and just pissed me off. There were so many other things they could have done. Make it so they need to shoot something off the ship to stop it exploding or something. Anything would have been better than what we got.
Such a dumb way to end the episode. And I say that as someone who is being far more accepting of "It's just silly" and "Don't think about it too much" when it comes to Who. This was just too far for me though.
