The Deadly Assassin - Brilliant
Loved finding out about the Timelords. Mentions of the Rassillon, seeing their costumes, hearing mention of the regeneration limits (is this the first time?) The Master was also looking a lot worse for wear!
Was great all that was set in Gallifrey, wasn't a fan of the third episode, and not sure why the water Goth was in suddenly burst into flames.
Also, presumably everybody in that episode that died just happened to be on their last regeneration?

Or killed by things that stop it :shifty:
Hyperion wrote:why the water Goth was in suddenly burst into flames.

Its actually a swamp with gas. Goth fires a gun and it sets it off.
Hyperion wrote:Pyramids of Mars
Not sure about a couple of things, why there was a forcefield

When the first chap comes through the tunnel he brings the equipment with him. Its to isolate them obviously.
Hyperion wrote:and whatever the end cop out was.

Sutekh still had to travel back to Earth via the space-time tunnel. So the Doctor moved the arrival time of the tunnel so far into the future Sutekh died.

:o . Uhm... no. I gotta confess that I've had a huge clear-up of GR messages and I only have the past two Who updates now. Have I made a mistake in doing this? :shifty: .

I have the Shada bluray, did anyone pick it up over Christmas? I thought it was completely animated, but it turns out that it's only sections. Also there's only a 2 hour cut and not episodic :fp:

... :o . Two gifts... gifts of adventure and intrigue!

Thanks, man. I'm listening to Storm Warning now. I have never tried an audio story before. The stereo sound effects are excellent!

...I really enjoyed that! I've never really listened to an "audio book" before and it was great fun.

A (late-opened) Christmas gift for the Who Club - thanks, Matt :toot: .

Yep, certainly will. I find these "audio books" to be relaxing; I just lay on my sofa with headphones on, listening to a great Who adventure. Awesome stuff!

The Talons of Weng-Chiang things

This would be the final story produced under Philip Hinchcliffe ending his 3 season run as the head of the show. Working closely with writer Robert Holmes the pair oversaw a golden age of both ratings and critical acclaim (although not always at the time- see The Deadly Assassin). From here on the "gothic horror" element was phased out. It has been suggested that getting into trouble for being too violent played a part in this change. Regardless as for why season 15 Graham Williams would take over.
Robert Banks Stewart (writer of Terror of the Zygons and Seeds of Doom) wrote a story outline called "The Foe from the Future" and this inspired parts of this story. The Foe from the Future would later be adapted by Big Finish.
Early on it had been decided that the Master would return again but Hinchcliffe thought having him be the surprise villain again in season 14 was too much.
Talons continued the trend for incorporating ideas from cinema. Namely The Phantom of the Opera and the works of Arthur Conan Doyle. In this story we are treated to the Doctor in a traditional Sherlock Holmes outfit, this is the only serial the fourth Doctors trademark scarf doesn't appear.
It was briefly considered that Jago and Litefoot would have their own spin off series. This did however eventually happen many years later in 2009 when Big Finish began producing Jago and Litefoot stories. They would go on to have 13 series of adventures (plus some extras) that would see them deal with danger on a delightfully regular occurrence! Dash my optics it was so splendid. They were even one of the first to get a new/classic Who crossover when they teamed up with Strax! Start with The Mahogany Murderers if your interested. Cant recommend them enough, the best Who spin off, although sadly the series has ended after the death of Trevor Baxter (Litefoot) last year. :(
Despite its critical acclaim the story is often noted for its potential racist depiction of the Chinese. For the most part I feel its in keeping with the period setting, for modern audiences its unfortunate that actor John Bennett playing Chang was in yellowface but it wasn't uncommon then. I'd say that much of the Chinese culture mentioned is presented with some wonder and Changs story arc ends with him finding some honour and a chance to redeem himself. I would even say his end is tragically noble.
The Big Finish audio story "The Butcher of Brisbane" is a prequel/sequel to Talons. And its bloody brilliant.

Has an amazing score. :datass:

CORKS!

Dear club members.......
This is where things are going to get a little tricky. We will be skipping along quite quickly here and there are a few reasons for this. Post Talons, post Hinchcliffe, the show struggled to maintain the exceptionally high standards it had reached. The first half of Tom Bakers run is often referred to as the golden era of Doctor Who and with good reason. I've already selected 7 stories for the 4th Doctor during this period and he would go on to have 4 more seasons! Whilst it was never as brilliant as often there are still many great stories during this but its a little frustrating because they are tied up in longer story arcs. Basically Toms run as the Doctor could have been a whole club on its own! So this weeks new story is going to be our final adventure with the 4th Doctor! I'll do my best to fill in the gaps either side of this (but I also dont want to spoil those gaps in case you decided to seek them out yourselves)

Following the adventure with Jago and Litefoot the Doctor and Leela would go on to share another season together. Season 15 would see them visit a lighthouse trapped in an unnatural fog, take on the government on Pluto, out George Lucas at George Lucas stuff 20 years early and perhaps most famously introduce the Doctors newest companion........ K-9!

But the season would end with another visit to Gallifrey where the Doctor would take the role as President. Here Leela would depart staying behind with K-9. Only the Doctor had more then one K-9!

Season 16 was an ambitious season long story made up of 6 serials, known as The Key to Time season. The Doctor was tasked by a powerful being, known as the White Guardian, with tracking down the 6 segments of the Key to Time before his opposite, the Black Guardian, does so. The segments were hidden across time and space, camouflaged as objects, but when formed could control the balance of the universe. The Doctor is given a new assistant to help in this quest, a member of his own race, the Time Lady Romanadvoratrelundar. But we will just call her Romana. :P Played by the wonderful Mary Tamm the duo, aided by K-9 Mark 2 took on this dangerous task. On the whole I have to say its a rather splendid season.....

Of course our heroes would triumph, pissing off the Black Guardian who vowed to have his revenge one day. The Doctor and Romana would fit the TARDIS with the randomizer in order to prevent the Black Guardian predicting their movements. Typically the first planet they arrive at is Skaro, the home of the Daleks. :slol: Season 17 brought them back for the first time since Genesis of the Daleks, alongside their creator. The opening of season 17 also saw Romana regenerate, Mary Tamm had left the show between the seasons and in came Lalla Ward who had played the role of Princess Astra during the Key to Time.

"Oh look, rocks!"

One other notable debut in season 16 is that of famed writer Douglas Adams who penned the serial, The Pirate Planet. For season 17 he became the shows script editor, contributing to this weeks story. And what a story. If I had to pick just 1 story for new Who fans to watch of classic Who this would be it.........

Story 20-

City of Death

Whilst taking in the sights of Paris 1979, the Doctor and Romana sense that something is going wrong with time. Who and what is tampering with time?
