i get the feeling chibnal banks to much on the goodwill his ideas may generate. what i mean is the sort of thinking that leads to bringing back kate for fan service and then not doing anything with her. or thinking that casting a female makes it ok to play homage to a misogynist. or that having a person of colour as the doctor for the first time is so huge that they ended up with less screen time than paul macgann and jon hurt. please tell me im not the only one who finds these things a bit off

I still need to finish the Flux run, hadn't even realised there was a new episode today until I saw this thread. Chibnall has basically killed my interest in the show

There was a New Year special as well.

Flux was gooseberry fool.

New Year was decent.

Sea Devils was gooseberry fool.

I forgot about that special as well! :fp:

I'm just going to have to power through the gooseberry fool, fortunately the Star Trek rewatch has given me plenty of tolerance for crap sci-fi!

I just hadn't realised that Who was on last night. I'm not even sure if I saw the last series or special... I think I did but I struggle to remember much about the past couple of series. I'll need to go check out the iPlayer.

Overnight rating of 2.2m, a new low for Who apparently, down 1m compared to the New Year special. 11th most watched show of the day and beaten by Antiques Roadshow which aired at the same time on BBC2.

I'd make a quick video too, but it would be a second long with the review just being the word 'gooseberry fool' and then it would end.

Watching it I thought wow is this bad or what, thinking I was a jaded old man then looked online to see lots of hate and felt a little reassured it wasn't just me, making it was also a good excuse to put some good Pertwee seadevils footage in there.

Unrelated to the current show (I've not watched any of it in a couple of years now) but I was watching "Last Night In Soho" a few weeks ago and was struck by just how good an Edgar Wright helmed Doctor Who show could be.

It won't happen as he's too busy making movies, but I got a definite Who vibe from that movie (Not just cos Matt Smith is in it). Would be really interested to see what he could bring to it.

But yeah we'll see if RTD can re-inject some life into the show again. He's done it before.

I couldn't quite put my finger on why I was finding this era to be so consistently disappointing. To say it was because of the bad plot and writing seemed almost too simple of a reason, as the show has had its fair share of it in the past and I've still kept watching. I randomly came across this article this morning that, at least for me, felt like it finally summed up why this era of Doctor Who hasn't landed with me and it's largely due to the consistent theme of "helplessness" or "inaction". It was an interesting read, so I thought I'd share it and see what others think.

The Thirteenth Doctor is a largely passive character, who seems unable or unwilling to effect any meaningful change to the worlds in which she finds herself. In both “Arachnids in the UK” and “Revolution of the Daleks,” industrialist Jack Robertson (Chris Noth) escapes scot-free despite being implicated in disasters that killed multiple people. At the end of “Spyfall, Part 2,” after assisting an alien species in an attempted invasion, tech mogul Daniel Barton (Lenny Henry) just… walks away.

Finally got round to watching this last night. It was poor. Actually think I probably prefer Warriors of the Deep. Which is a right gooseberry fool show of a production.

Doctor announced!

twitter.com/bbcdoctorwho/status/1523263950661775360

The BBC has today announced Ncuti Gatwa is the new Doctor set to take charge of the TARDIS.

Star of stage and screen, Ncuti is best known for his critically acclaimed performance in Sex Education as the iconic Eric Effiong, for which he was awarded Best Actor Award at the Scottish BAFTA’s in 2020 as well as numerous nominations including Best Male Performance in a comedy programme at this year’s BAFTA’s.

Speaking of his new role, Ncuti said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same. Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

Russell T Davies, Showrunner adds: “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”

Charlotte Moore, Chief Content Officer said: “Ncuti has an incredible dynamism, he’s a striking and fearless young actor whose talent and energy will set the world alight and take Doctor Who on extraordinary adventures under Russell T Davies’ new era."

What the heck! He's too good in Sex Education to be anything *other* than Eric now

A lot better than most of the rumours, at least!
