He says this but not sure if he has worked for the BBC before. It might come as a shock. That said of any of the US writers it might go to he would probably work out best as I remember reading how much he was influenced by old British Sci-Fi. As long as he is witty. God damn I've missed RTD/Moffs wit so much under Chibbers.

I'm sure I've read before the BBC has explicitly rejected American writers writing for Doctor Who in any capacity.

FAKE EDIT: It was Joe Hill.

HILL: "So…I'm a huge Doctor Who geek. Watching Doctor Who…watching the David Tennant Doctor Who with my boys was a really happy part of their childhood, and of me being a dad. And I had some ideas for Doctor Who, and I really wanted to write for that show. And my screen agent got me a chance to pitch on it. So, i spent a month and a half working on three pitches, and man, I have never imagined harder in my whole life. I mean, I just worked so hard on these things. And by chance, I actually wound up spending a weekend with Neil Gaiman. We were in the same place at the same time, and hanging out a lot, and he actually edited my pitches. He actually went through the pitches and was like, 'Yes do this. Don't do that. This is a good idea. Hate this idea.' You know? And I'm like, you couldn't ask for a better editor!"

GOLDEN: "Of course!"

HILL: "And so I, you know, with trepidation and my heart in my mouth, I sent in my pitches, and a couple weeks passed, and I got…the email I got back said, 'We have never let an American write Doctor Who, and if we were going to, we wouldn't start with you."

KEENE: "Oh my god!

GOLDEN: "Oh come on! Are you strawberry floating kidding me?"

KEENE: "Oh my god!"

(Hill and Keene burst into laughter)

HILL: "Is that not the most smoking rejection of all time?"

KEENE: "Jesus…"

HILL: "I remain in awe. I remain in awe. It's still my favorite rejection."

I think Dr Who needs to go into deep storage for a while and be properly rebooted, like it was with Eccleston.

Jodie Whittaker never had a chance with these scripts, and it was clear the budget was cut to nearly nothing. She reminded me of a Colin Baker type doctor - not her fault, just completely restricted. It also became a children's show, rather than something that could appeal to adults as well.

The BBC just never seem to know what to do with it.

A few years hiatus until someone comes up with a good pitch is probably best.

This is pretty much my thinking, too. I really enjoyed the vast majority of "New Who" (Ecclestone onwards) but the past two seasons have - for my personal tastes - been disappointing. I had high hopes for the new Doctor and the crew (lots of good characters!) but I feel that the stories have been, in the main, pretty dull; occasionally some potentially interesting topics but poorly handled. Whereas I bought and would watch repeats of the earlier series, I wouldn't with the recent ones.

I dont really buy the it needs to go away for a bit idea. Its barely been on in a regular form for what feels like ages. We've got a tiny season and then some "specials" to look forward to. Obviously when the big resets happen like this they should take time to get it ready. It just needs some TLC and some competent planning and writing. Stick it back on a Sat evening to. :capnscotty: And then hope that whatever direction the people in charge take clicks with the wider audience.

You should probably rewatch those Colin Baker stories. Some of it is as far from the kids show as Who ever has been.

Ah, well I did. What I really like is his commentary on the DVD's, some of the most arch criticism you'll ever get on an official BBC product.

Timelash is an absolute classic - one of the worst couple of episodes you'll ever get, and yet he seems to laughing his head off about it on the commentary and acknowledging that it's absolutely terrible.

But it was clearly pared back for budget reasons, just like McCoy was. A real shame, as I think they both wanted to be good Drs, but we're just hamstrung by having to work for a broadcaster that didn't really understand what it had.

Oh yes this is all true, when the hiatus happened the BBC gave them some reasons but wouldnt then help them achieve the changes that needed to be made. But so much of it at that time certainly wasnt made just for the kids. No way stories like Vengence on Varos or Revelation of the Daleks are just a childrens show. Thats not even mentioning some of Attack of the Cybermen or how utterly grim The Two Doctors is. Even Timelash is pretty vile in places and thats not down to its budget. Its actually this stuff that meant they reacted so much the other way with early McCoy stories. But ultimate what turned the show around near the end of its original run was having the producer and writer on the same page. Which for most of the 80s had not been the case.

Also going on hiatus doesn’t mean things will work out well

What the show needs isn't a story writer who then comes into science fiction but a writer and showrunner of that genre who is used writing logical, interesting science as well as coming up with inventive, memorable villains. With that in mind and given the quality of the past 4 series since the revival on Dave I would give the job to Red Dwarf co-creator Doug Naylor. From their divergent novels 'Last Human' (Naylor) vs 'Backwards' (Rob Grant) it is clear Naylor was the science guy whilst Grant the humourist. Most of the recent series of RD have been co-written so he has experience of teamwork and a writers room.

Given actors attached to the lead writers often get the part I would then cast Danny John-Jules as the Doctor. Evidence he would be good? He can pull off the flamboyance of a Time Lord easy, is fit enough to keep up with the physical stuff and has worked in science fiction before and therefore aware of how to act against non-existent special effects and how to deal with fandom. You watch this and tell me he wouldn't be perfect for the Doctor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0tAIflX5Ak

That is a bit of a shocker. Though am not surprised, he wrote the best era of New Who.

Seems like the BBC feel the show is in such of a crisis they need the ultimate safe pair of hands.
