I'm personally not really sure how to take it. On one hand we've got one of the most talented British tv writers taking over, with a looooong list of well regarded popular shows behind him. Not many writers can give you the feel of a character in just a few lines like him. Just look at the leads in the show right now in comparison. I mean thats massively exciting! And we know he knows the show! However that also means we have seen his vision of Who already. We've seen his taste in TARDIS design. His take on the Daleks, Cybermen, Master etc. Has he got it in him to do new things with those? I hope so. I dont want the Time War part 2. I really dont want that overly domestic "earthbound" Doctor Who back. Dont get me wrong, it has its place and it can work brilliantly but I want more imagination then that. The prospect of Chibbers going wasnt just about leaving him behind, it was the excitement of something new to. Will he stick to the format he gave the show when he rebooted it?
On the upside he is a huge name! Which will almost certainly bring talent into the show. Not just acting talent but also writers. Perhaps even a budget increase? Will Murray Gold return?
But then on the other hand I remember how tired I was of his shtick back when he was showrunner. People becoming super heroes to solve things. "Story arcs" that were like Wheres Wally (if we were lucky we could have just had people stop and talk about bees) and psychics just plucking phrases out of no where to ramp up the drama. Plus some of the hokiest sci-fi in the show ever. I do often wonder just how much people look back at his run and remember the best bits where often not written by RTD or him working with someone.
However. It surely cant be any worse then the last few years. But if he can make it distinct from his first era I'm up for that.
