I'm surprised (and a wee bit disappointed) that Gatiss didn't get the job tbh.

None of Chibnall's Who episodes really stand out for me.

Peter Capaldi to appear in Doctor Who young adult spin-off Class

Eight-episode Patrick Ness-scripted series set in fictional London school starts filming in April and set to debut online on BBC3

The Doctor Who spin-off, Class, is to begin filming in April, with the current Time Lord, Peter Capaldi, set to make an appearance.

Sources told the Radio Times that Class has a “close connection with Doctor Who so don’t be surprised if Peter pops up”. A full cast list is still being finalised.

The series of eight 45-minute episodes is set to debut online on BBC3 towards the end of the year before airing on BBC1 or BBC2. It is unclear whether all eight episodes will be released in one go to allow fans to binge watch.

The show is set at the fictional Coal Hill school in Shoreditch, which has featured regularly in Doctor Who episodes, including the first broadcast in 1963. More recently, the doctor’s companion, Clara Oswald, has been seen teaching there during the 50th anniversary special, The Day of the Doctor.

The Guardian reported that the BBC had commissioned Class, which is being written by the award-winning young adult author Patrick Ness.

It is described as having the “action, heart and adrenalin of the best YA [young adult] fiction [such as] Buffy the Vampire Slayer [and] Hunger Games”.

The outgoing Doctor Who showrunner, Steven Moffat, who is executive producing Class, has previously described the show as “growing up in Britain, but with monsters”.

He added: “No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we are bringing his brilliant storytelling into Doctor Who.”

Good.
It will be nice to have a Doctor with a decent run for a change and Capaldi is doing a great job.

Smith had the longest run of any doctor so far. It'll be nice if it gets followed up with another long one though.

I must be getting old as he seemed to be here and gone again in a flash.

Well that's not true, Baker still is the longest serving Doctor and even if you only count the new series Tennant was there longer and did more episodes.

I guess I'm a bit of a "casual" fan of Doctor Who. As a kid, I used to watch episodes back in the 80s - mainly with Tom Baker as The Doctor - but I can't actually remember any storylines or even names of things. Following the arrival of the Eccleston re-boot series I have watched nearly all of the series and thoroughly enjoyed them. I somehow missed seeing most of series 8 and 9 but I have them on disc to catch-up on. It's quite handy for me that we won't see any new stuff until next year, as this can be my catch-up time!

From what I've seen so far, the Weeping Angel baddies have been my fave - for me, they're the perfect balance of being creepy but without being gory.

Who has very rarely been gory. Even when it is its pretty tame.

The BBC has announced the cast for the new Doctor Who Spin off, Class, as the series begins filming today.

The eight part series will star young new talents Greg Austin, Fady Elsayed, Sophie Hopkins and Vivian Oparah.

They will be joined by Katherine Kelly, as she takes the role of a teacher and powerful new presence at Coal Hill School.

I really can't help but think that Class looks like it's going to be terrible. I mean, the cast looks like a catalog of stereotypes - cool guy with some hidden useful talent, serious uptight guy with knowledge, serious book-wormy woman who may be in a Fight Club, quirky cool "down wiv da kids" woman, "sexy" glamour puss woman. I mean, it all just looks so... eurgh. I wasn't expecting much anyway, but even so, it's just so... so typical, and they all look so irritating.

If they wanted a real spin-off, they'd abandon the school (which admittedly once had promise in a Demon Headmaster sort of way) and do some sort of Sherlock-grade mini-series', each one following a different set of characters, races, scenarios and such. With only a small handful of episodes each series, episodes would have correspondingly higher budgets, look nicer and hopefully have better writing. I just want to see a creepy, dark series focusing on the creeping threat of a quietly renewing Cyberiad (maybe with shades of Flash Gordon and other 70s and 80s sci-fi), maybe a period sci-noir thriller involving Amy and Rory in mid-20th century New York.
