As a child/teen I never looked back, once something was old or out of date to me it was dead and had absolutely nothing of value. Clothes, movies, games, music, once they were a two old I disgarded them. Same for history, everything up until that point I cared nothing for it, old culture and events could burn and be forgotten as far as I cared.

Fast forward about a five years after my teens ended and something hit me, VH1 was having a Madonna day (was never a fan, but that's beside the point) and the video of came on (see below) that felt like a cross between a gut punch and a warm tingly feeling at the same time. All these memories came flooding back, going to see Austin Powers with a group of friends, the accompanying CD-ROM that I played to death of my new desktop PC of the time. Then I became obsessed, I started debuting all the old games, movies and CDs that I'd once consigned to the dustheap and trying to reconnect with old friends on Facebook and meeting up again.

Strange thing is I've never felt that about any other point in life. I've traveled the world, been through college and uni, had many relationships and good times (partying, clubbing, gigs) and am really happy with my career and current life situation but I never get the same feelings about media and memories from that time. Childhood/teen years seem vivid to me, as do recent years, everything else in-between in a blur.

So, is anyone else like this?

I think about my childhood and teenhood a lot because it was the only time my entire family was alive. I had my grandparents and my Mum (who wasn't quite as ill as she became in 2007). Yeah I live on my own and I've got a good group of friends, but when I think about how much easier my life was back then I miss it a lot.

It really hurts thinking about all the changes I've been though.

I get it a lot these days, late 90's music in particular does have quite the nostalgic effect.

Doesn't everyone? I mean, even Oliver Twist maybe looks back on that gruel with a particular fondness at some point or other.

Out of curiosity, how old are you guys? Me and my best mate (a friend from secondary school) had a catch-up last night and we seemed to dwell on the stuff that went on when we were 23-26ish. We're both 43 so I'm wondering if the distance is the key factor, rather than the moment in time itself, if that makes sense.

Not really but that's mainly because I really can't remember most of it.
I can't remember the names of the people I went to school with and the faces are mostly gone as well which I suppose I should be sad about but I've always had the shittiest memory.
I'm 42 but I started forgetting people I went to school with in my early 20's.

I'm 35

This was triggered around the age of 23-25 for me, yet (20 years on) in no way do I ever feel like reconnecting with friends from college or uni, great times but the music from the time doesn't fill me with the same feeling.

My friends also seem to be sharing a lot of late 80s/90s stuff on Facebook lately, when we've met up (usually with girlfriends/wives) we usually pick some 80s/90s themed nights.

My mum to this day has an obsession with 60s stuff like The Beatles and Motown and is always discussing childhood/teen memories with my uncle, I even set her up on Facebook and straight away she was adding old school friends and meeting up with them.

Yes, and at times probably to an unhealthy degree. For me it's probably my childhood to mid-teens or late teens.

Please do not post this in the "No Context" thread

I'm nostalgic for how cheap video games were in the late 2000s. Was a good time to be a games collector.

I'm already nostalfic for living with housemates and I only moved out 4 months ago.

Basically every previous point in my life has nostalgia.

Yeah, I had friends locally when I was young.

I have no friends now, my mother suddenly died in February and I rarely bother with others on the family.

Only good thing I have a the missus and kids.

Being young was ace, friends, family, no worries. Just being happy.

I definitely reminisce about my schooldays. When you’re at school you cant wait to leave (and people tell you constantly that you’ll miss school once you leave, but if you’re like me you refused to believe them) and then when you actually leave school you realise just how relatively easy you had it (obviously not the case for everyone), you saw your friends 5 days a week (if they lived locally you spent even more time with them), no job unless you wanted, loads of free time and so on. I don’t speak to anyone (on a regular basis at least) who I went to school with, they've all gone their own ways which is fair enough.

I get nostalgic and extremely jealous when I see young people chilling out during working hours. Skateboarding, listening to music, shopping... whatever it is, while I'm working like a dog.

I'm one of those people who feels nostalgic about scarsity. I remember only having like four CDs and a few games to play. It made them feel special. But really I prefer my life now, I have much more money and can basically do whatever I want.

I think it’s normal for people to look back at their childhood/teens/20s and wish they were still there.

I miss my late teens/early 20s but I’m also pretty sure that I am just forgetting the stuff I hated at the time.
