Maybe they're going to have an absolute last minute blitz of advertising rather than have a longer PR campaign.

Both companies are going to spending an absolute fortune and I imagine adds will be pretty much everywhere soon.
At the moment I'm more interested in what the console looks like. Have they gone with a bog standard console slab or something at least a bit different?

For pure looks wise it’ll have to go some to beat the Xbox Series X as I think that looks fantastic with its two GameCubes taped together theme

Or (as the tweet linked above states in the image) have they pushed it back to August so they’re showing their stuff off after Microsoft in July? Really eager to see both companies first party efforts so I can decide which is a better fit for me going forward.

Early June is still the preferred rumour to believe, with another showing in August.

Speaking of which...

So if June event and the above are true, I'm guessing we'll get the price and launch date, and more games, in the (rumoured) August State of Play.

I’d prefer June to see a chunk of games for the PS5, at least that way by the end of July I should have some idea of which one I’ll be opting for or at least an idea of which one, or if either have done anything to tempt me to buy at launch.

I'll be happy if the only upgrade is no more pop up in games.

LET THE LEAKING COMMENCE!

PS5 game (possibly) accidentally confirmed by licensed manufacturer:

I think it would be a bigger surprise if there wasn’t going to be another one. Now, if it’s actually a launch title, that’s another matter...if you were Sony would you trust them to get their game out on time?

I think Sony are determined to hold off on showing actual PS5 games until after TLOU2 and possibly GOT are out. They’re both technically stunning games and it might be a disservice to the developers to show things potentially so superior right before their release.

After GT Sport I’m wary, it plays well on a pad but if you’re not massively into online racing it’s pretty boring after a while content wise, as always hot-lapping is fun but that’s kind of all there is. GT 7 would need to impress for me to consider it. Graphically it’ll look amazing though, but then again I’m expecting the majority of next gen games to look amazing.

I’m still wondering if Sony are going to be doing similar to Microsoft and offering free upgrades on some games such as TLOU 2, AC Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077 (although I’m not sure if Microsoft will be covering the cost of these free upgrades or the developers/publishers themselves?), for a game coming out so late in the current generation it does make sense to launch them/have them available on both.

I think it would be a rather silly move by Sony not to have free upgrades of first party titles as it would look rather terrible to have a situation where you have to for example pay for the PS5 version of LoU 2 while all Microsoft first party games are being upgraded for free.

I don’t think there will be ps5 versions. BC sure with some added features through a patch? Sure. Maybe even designed to run natively as a PS5 game. An actual PS5 version of TLOU2 built to PS5 spec? Very unlikely. It’s not the same situation as going from ps3 to 4 here where actual significant work has to be done to justify a price.

I fully expect games like cyberpunk to basically offer PC high end settings that unlock when played on XSX or PS5, similar to how the same games work across xbox one and X. Expecting us to pay extra for this won’t go down too well so I don’t see it happening with cross-gen games but I guess we’ll see.

How things were done last gen is obviously no indication of how things will be done now, but... this article is from 20/2/13: First PS4 games revealed. The Last of Us was released 4-5 months later.

True, but there's 2 quick reasons why I think things might be different this time.

First is I think TLOU2 is a much bigger leap technically over ND's last game than the original was over UC3. Obviously could be wrong but I get the feeling Sony don't want to reward ND for all this effort by showing something far superior literally right before they finally release it.

Second I'm actually expecting a noticeably bigger jump this time around when comparing late last gen to those early PS4 reveals (cross-gen aside). Very uncommon opinion right now I guess but we'll see. I just think Guerilla have been very busy.

Aye but it's fun to speculate :P

Agree with your thinking re jump in power between PS4 to PS5 than PS3 to PS4. But on the TLoU2 front: it's just a fact of life that the work will be trumped soon after release. However any sting they feel from that will be soothed by the knowledge it'll sell by the barrow load regardless.

I could see them re-releasing TLoU2 in a year on PS5 and including the multiplayer mode they were apparently working on so Sony can claim it's more than a straight port which would have been free if Microsoft had done it.

I think they'll catch a lot of heat if they do that. I actually think the TLoU2 MP will be Sony's push for a show-piece home grown MP game (the last new Sony guy said he wanted to see them go after that online MP mtx money) and so will be given away a la Fortnite, etc. Heck, I can even see them showing something off regarding it at the PS5 show.

There are literally hundreds of cross-buy games across PS3/Vita and PS4. Some even came years later with PS4 upgrades. I'm curious why you now see this as a thing Sony doesn't do but MS would? Genuinely interested.

Haven't Microsoft been more forthcoming about next gen upgrades being free?

Yeah there were a lot of cross-buy games between PS3/4 but The Last of Us wasn't one of them.

I just meant to say, Microsoft have already come out and said all their first-party games will get a free upgrade to the new console which will pressure Sony to do the same. Maybe Sony were planning to that anyway and Microsoft just said it first, we won't really know.

I think TLOU2 would look amazing running at 60fps, hopefully they can somehow just unlock the frame rate on PS5

Yeah I presume for all first party games and then some third party ones, I do wonder who’s covering the cost for the third party ones though, obviously Microsoft will for the first party games and it’ll be a win in their eyes if it gets more people on their consoles but if they’re not covering third party games I can’t see them doing it for too many (or too long) unless they’re happy to take quite a loss for the cross gen games to again hopefully increase their install base.

The Master Chief collection wasn't free for me either, despite already owning every single game including the anniversary on 360. I was happy to pay, would I be happy to pay to play it again on XSX? Hell no, and there are very specific reasons why. I don't think some people understand how the situation is different now.

Again I can only assume people still don't understand how things are different this time. For the first console generation in history, we have much faster versions of the same architecture. There's no new architecture to re-learn from scratch, code doesn't need to be rebuilt just to run on the new hardware, it will just work, and that was the goal of both companies when they switched to AMD for everything last gen.

Just like a developer doesn't now charge you to play XOX games you'd already purchased on XO we shouldn't be charged to play them on XSX. It wouldn't shock me if a publisher tries this, but we'll see how that works out for them.

To anyone who thinks this is different situation because it's a whole new generation, it's actually not different, it couldn't be more identical, the next gen difference is that exclusive games (next-gen exclusive) will have a much higher base spec to target which is why games will look so much better. Cross-gen games will continue to work as they do between XO and XOX, or even PS4 and Pro. Hearing we don't have to pay for this is great and all but it doesn't mean we should have expected to, at least once we actually understand why things are different.

The only situation where I can see things being different and maybe justify some of the questions is if cross-gen games, I'll use Cyberpunk as an example, are literally 2 different versions of the same game. The last real example I can think of is probably Ghost Recon Advanced Warfare PS2/Xbox versions compared to the 360 version. Are people really expecting this with Cyberpunk? And other cross-gen games? It's not going to happen and if it does i'll be back here first thing to comment on how wrong I was. The amount of work required will be someone saying can we get it to run with these PC high end settings? Yes? Great do it!.*

*Over simplification sure but you get the point.
