Its confirmed as being the current devkit, don't think they've confirmed that's what the final box will look like.

I doubt the final design of the retail unit has even been decided yet and all we've seen is dev kits.
They may not even know exactly the final dimensions yet as they will have more or less cooling depending on how much power they think they need to shoehorn in to keep up with or beat the Microsoft machine.

Dev kits (usually) look nothing like the final console on purpose, becuase they have more stuff in them and are pretty much console pc hybrids. For example, for rockband 4, we had a ps4 devkit that looked like this:

It does make me wonder if they'll need to take an innovative approach to cooling, though, if that's what the devkits look like. Might need to make more allowances for airflow in the actual unit. At least, I hope they do: my PS4 is bordering on unusable now, such is the noise it makes under load, especially with disc-based games.

That's a good shout, Poser. My PS4 Pro is, generally, not bad on the noise front, but it does have its moments. I nearly always play with a download version and I really notice the noise when I do use a disc.

For next-gen, I'd rather see a quiet 1080p/4K 60fps system than an "8K" beast that sounds like a petrol engine.

Thanks for all the explanations very helpful :) I remember the initial PS3 designs that never came to fruition so I suppose we just have to wait. I’d imagine it’ll be similar to PS4 slim, not really sure what else they can do with a box to be honest :slol:

The dev kit design, especially the one where the fins are lit up, looks the most consolesque design we've had in generations and I love it; I am sick to the back teeth of owning nondescript, minimalist, uninspired boxes of tech meh. And if that is the sort of design we end up with then the smaller the better as I want those pos out of my line of sight.

What they need to do is make the next gen machines look exactly like the Atari ST as that was the pinnacle of gaming design.

That can be the shape of the next Xbox.

Since wireless controllers became a thing I've always had my consoles hidden away where they can't be seen any way so I couldn't give two hoots what this thing looks like!

Someone pointed out on Twitter, and I can't believe I haven't seen it since, that the dev kit is shaped like a five. V.

From the Modern Warfare thread:

jawafour wrote:The game installation requires 175Gb on the PC version... and this could grow further with updates and DLC. I wonder what space will be required by the console versions?

This is something I'd like to see addressed next gen. Is there a reason more games can't stream directly off the disc any more?

It's quicker to read data from a hard drive than it is from a disc. Next gen, where solid state drives will probably become standard, will be even quicker. The challenge is that as resolution increases, the demand for higher-quality graphics (textures) increases and thus more space is needed and it takes longer to read in all of the required data. Discs, in their current format, sometimes don't offer the storage capacity nor the speed that we have become used to.

Streaming gets rid of the issue of data storage limitations but the streaming speed needs to become as fast and reliable as reading from a local hard / solid state drive.

More efficient use of local versus remote resources should become a standard approach IMO. I don't need 175GB of data to play Modern Warfare - I can only be in one part of the game at a time, and I can only move so quickly between parts of the game so only downloading and storing the parts I need now, and those I will need soon would be a better use of resources. Ditch everything else once it becomes "stale" to free up space again.

As average downloads speeds increase and allowance caps get removed then this approach should become more feasible and avoid the need for all of the game to be downloaded locally to massive storage devices.

For PS5 all games will require installation on to SSD this includes Blu-ray discs copies. This is because the SSD offers major speed increases and level loading that will be required for everyone to have. For example, if PS5 players running a game from Blu-ray had to wait for a level to load mid-movement then it would effectively be unplayable.

Imagine the racket a OG PS4 would make if it was constantly reading the disc  :dread:
