Sadly for Microsoft that criticism was well deserved, why even say it'll be gameplay when only one game actually showed any gameplay of note? Would have been better just having a reel of 3rd party trailers just so people know what games are currently 'Series X enhanced'. Hopefully this will not be the case for Sony's upcoming event and the same for Microsoft's event in July.

I think it's a bit odd that we haven't seen that actual console yet

Well there’s definitely a surprise there  . Unless it looks like a PS4 but with a 5 on it I guess. Actually even that would be a surprise. Basically I’d be surprised if there’s nothing surprising about it.

I really, really want it to look exactly like an Atari ST.

Another thing I’ve been thinking since Mark Cerny’s talk is the possibility of PS3 backwards compatibility through actual hardware emulation.

Anyone who watched the whole talk will have seen how he talks about customising the RDNA CU’s, I think he only mentions 2, to work very similarly to the PS3 SPU’s. If I remember correctly this was to massively accelerate the 3D audio engine they are putting in place with PS5. He mentions the PS3 being an audio beast in comparison to PS4 which was pretty weak by comparison.

As soon as I heard this I was thinking there’s no real reason to give us this detail regarding SPU similarity. He could easily have just said we’ve customised some spare CU’s to accelerate the audio. I was half expecting him to later say remember those CU’s? They can also preform SPU functions to run PS3 games...

Anyone else think this is a possibility? Clearly it won’t be a case of games simply working natively like PS4 on 5 but I can see this being a similar situation to how the Xbox one runs 360 games. Work involved, probably after launch, and a slowly expanding list.

Hopefully I’m not being unreasonably optimistic.

Had a look. It's a bit random to let people view the whole magazine for free when print media is struggling so badly! Is this a "legit" link?

I think there's more BC to be announced for the dumbest reason ever:

Image

What's with all the dead space below PS4? Yes, I'm being serious. I think the next time we see that slide it'll have other PS consoles below PS4. Maybe. Though I dunno why they'd hold that info back...

Probably because they can get another round of publicity out of it this way. That and there's always the chance that at the time they did the initial PS5 tech reveal they weren't 100% certain on the wider backwards compatibility offering and so this way they can always hold back PS1-3 if it turns out they can't support it as well as they thought!

Yes...incredibly. It's from Future Publishing's own issuu account. Maybe they think this is a good month to get more eyeballs on it.

Or somebody has cocked up.

They gave the link out to subscribers only. (To make up for the possibility of the issue arriving late in the post. Gonna guess the editorial staff aren't too chuffed about it.)

There is no reason why they can’t support all their previous consoles games on/through the PS5 system, its more than powerful enough to to emulate the games if they wanted to put in the work.

That’s actually a really good spot, looks like they could definitely fit PS3-PS1 in the remaining space and the smaller gap on the right might just say emulation mode or however they decide to do/if they do it.

I know they’ve been quiet on backwards compatibility but I do wonder if their solution will be as good as Microsoft’s as from the sounds of it they have pretty much nailed it.

Like with Microsoft’s it sounds nice but also like something you’d hear in a cinema after an ad for their sound system
