It’s just a shame this will likely put the nail in the coffin of ever seeing a new Ape Escape

Oddworld: Soulstorm presents itself well and shows a grand vision for the series, but as a modern game in 2021, it's just not where it needs to be. It can be extremely awkward to pull off even basic manoeuvres, some new features miss the mark, and certain levels made us want to quit altogether. Bugs exacerbate some of the gameplay frustrations with wonky AI, and ultimately the play experience can be frustratingly rigid. Fans will love this reimagining of a classic, and the franchise's unique charm shines through, but it's a tough sell for anyone coming to the series fresh.

+ That Oddworld charm is still there
+ Abe's double jump aids platforming
+ Some inventive puzzles
+ Pre-rendered scenes look great
- Gameplay feels dated and clunky
- Crafting seems unnecessary
- Buggy AI
- Some frustrating segments
- Occasional performance hitches
- Where's the fart button?

4/10

For a series that has always reviewed very favourably this really isn’t off to the best of starts. Haven’t played it myself yet, waiting for all the bugs and glitches to be wiped out.

Played Soulstorm for a hour and it plays like a fiddly platformer with puzzle elements.

It’s very clumbersome. End up deleting the game after running out of water bottles. The throwing mechanics should be a lot simple but no.

Awful game. It isn’t for me.

I like the new Oddworld game. It's not a classic and I don't know how I'd feel about parting with £40 for it, but as a PS+ monthly game I'm very happy with it. Giving it 4/10 seems excessively harsh.

The cynical inside me says it’s because they don’t want to release it for free as a upgrade...

Me too. I'd much prefer a prettier ps5 remaster of tlou 2(similar to what they did with the ps3 to ps4 tlou 1) than a tlou 1 remake.

Are they actually remaking The Last of Us? Guess if they do it’ll just be to update the movement, stealth, controls etc to be more like TLOU2? Still not got around to playing TLOU2 mind :shifty:

I haven't bought TLOU2 because after the original got a PS4 upgrade, I was imagining the same would happen for PS5 with this one. Annoyingly this does mean I've seen a major plot point spoiled for it.

So, Sony is dead eh?

Time for Atari to make a glorious comeback.

Re: TLOU remake, to put in perspective why it feels far too soon/unnecessary, imagine if Disney remade Frozen. Both were 2013 releases.

To be fair, there's much more that they can do with TLOU remake in 2021 than Disney could do with a Frozen remake. Not to mention the commercial sense it makes, assuming they tie it in with the TV show.

Still lame though.

Is there though? How much more than the PS4 remake? I understand that combat can be tightened up but this sounds like a from the ground up, multi-year remake with the resources that entails. Surely the only way to justify this would be to make huge changes - new cut scenes and cut scene direction, potentially using the likenesses and performances of the HBO cast?

You either end up with the most perfunctory of remakes (likely with identical cut scenes and acting) that annoys people who can see the waste of resources that could have been spent on new IP, or you really use those resources and piss off all the original fans to court new fans from HBO. I was dead set on buying a PS5 over a Series X but this is how Sony wants its lead teams to spend their time, I could waver.

Good to see they’re putting in the ability to store PS5 games on an external HDD, much better than re-downloading them as and when.

I was reading on Eurogamer that when they are transferring games to external and back they have to sit and look at a bar...as in, you can't do it in the background, I'm gonna presume this was not a thing on PS4 so it's odd that it's regressed.

Will install...later (TBD).

I've had no issues with my PS5 for the last couple of months and I'd like to keep it that way.
