I will say that the trailer for Godfall didn't really do anything for me, but it was nice to know that it was all "In-Engine" if not in-game.

I completely agree, it's just a brave decision by a developer to go next gen only and not having access to the PS4 market.
I suppose it depends how many PS5 they think will sell at launch.

Now we've had out first little look of the Xbox Series X it makes me wonder when we'll get our first look at PS5?
Hoepfully a presentation early next year.

I can't imagine the wait will be all that long simply because now that Microsoft has started everything they won't want them to dominate the headlines for months.

What Sony events are planned for the next few months?

The longer PS5 goes unannounced, the longer xbox has to build a lead in preorders. That'll have a direct effect on retailer's shelf space, perception of popularity and subsequently sales I would assume.

PS4 was a January or February announcement ahead of the launch toward the end of that year wasn't it? I imagine their plan was to do the same for this - MS releasing some info might have pushed them to be more aggressive in their schedule though.

Preorders aren't exactly a commitment, I can't imagine it will make much difference. Sony will start their hype cycle early next year with an E3 blowout I expect.

A guy in Game once told me the reason they had much more PS4 preorders than X1 in the build up to launch was because PS4 preorders had been open a lot longer

That one man's word is as good as gospel to me

As ever price will be a huge factor.
I wonder if we've seen the end of consoles being sold at a huge loss at launch as I'd love to see either PS5 or Series X be sold super cheap to try and get a sales bump.

Somehow Sony had to debunk rumours that the PS5 would be £900 :fp: .

https://www.t3.com/news/ps5-news-sony-d ... o-pound900

Erm, what kind of suicidal company would release a £900 console  .
It would be like Ford deciding the new Fiesta should cost £400k and then wondering why sales have been somewhat disappointing.

Wouldn’t mind seeing what a £900 machine would be capable of, tbh...

As long as there’s a mass market base machine, I’m kind of hoping Sony or Microsoft go a bit nuts on the premium model.

So would I but I have a feeling a £900 console won't sell in quite the large numbers Sony or Microsoft need.

I suppose they could maybe make some kind of super premium version so we could have a Base, Pro and Extreme model line-up with the extreme cranking everything up to 11 but I think the graphics difference between the 3 versions would have to be vast to convince people of the value of the top end.
Maybe if it had massive benefits for PSVR 2?

For PS4 I bought very few games (maybe ten non-digital across the entire generation?) and got my collection through PS+. If they are going to do what you suggest, I'm the enemy. :)

Old school PlayStation ray tracing...

Ray-tracing is set to become a need-to-have feature in gaming, with both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X featuring dedicated ray-tracing hardware. The technology will help elevate ninth-gen visuals by enabling more realistic lighting, shadows, and reflections.

But what was nearly lost to history is the revelatory fact that the PlayStation 2 was capable of performing real-time ray-tracing on its vector units (VUs), using a mere 16 KB of memory. An obscure video from the 2002 SCEE Assembly 2002 seminar was uncovered, showcasing a range of real-time PS2 tech demos.

Of particular interest is "Don't Touch the Sphere," which shows a ray-traced sphere on a multi-colored surface. While the demo is extremely simple, what's particularly interesting is that the ray-tracing wasn't done on the PS2's CPU at all. It was a pure vector unit operation.

The fact that PS2 resources were left on tap during the demo raises tantalizing questions about what could have been: could the PS2 have run extremely simple Marble Blast style games with ray-tracing? We'll never know now.

What's important is that this demo, like Crytek's Neon Noir demo, proves that ray-tracing isn't necessarily dependent on specialist hardware. As with any visual effect, ray-tracing performance depends in large part on how it's implemented.

A simple implementation like "Don't Touch the Sphere" will run readily on sixth-gen hardware. However, more complex Pixar-grade ray-tracing effects are still out of reach for all consumer hardware, RTX cards included.

Testing data from AMD recently leaked giving us some hint of the technical make-up of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. So what has been revealed, how accurate is the leak likely to be and how could the new Sony and Microsoft console possibly compare? The leak looks genuine, but take any analysis with just a pinch of salt. Regardless - here's what we think.

I wonder what games Sony will use to showcase the PS5?
Spiderman has seen a bit of action lately but I feel they'll need something to counter Flight Simulator on Xbox as that looks seriously amazing so hopefully an upgrade to Ace Combat 7.

Are we expecting a reveal before E3?

I would think so as surely they won't want the Series X unit being talked about with no actual PS5 retail unit to counter it.
I would imagine they have the final retail unit form factor decided just because they need to tell the people making the boxes what it looks like but that's just a guess.
I just don't think it makes sense for them to wait.
