The ‘no load times’ thing is likely minimal load times most of which will be hidden loads probably during cut scenes or similar.

Yep, it's likely a way to upgrade the SSD and it's been said the next gen uses some pretty integrated solutions to speed up loading times.
I don't think external drives are going to be able to give you the same transfer speed.

Having been away from Sony/MS consoles from about 2009 until this last year I have to say that the loading times are absolutely one of the most ridiculous things about the current console crop. Compared to PC loading times I regularly get from an SSD it's just insane what we are still putting up with.

Faster technology and clever design will make this absolutely one of the best improvements for the next generation IMO.

I suppose it's all a matter of perspective.
I've been through the era of using tapes or multiple disk swaps and my last PC was about a decade ago so this gen doesn't seem all that terrible. I do think you're right though that having almost instant loading (they say it'll be 10 to 15 times faster which seems like a lot) will help games like Skyrim where loading into a dungeon was pretty common and frustrating.
It'll be interesting when we finally have machines at home and we can play the same game on PS4 and PS5 and compare.

The fact that both Sony and Microsoft are both trying to create the fastest loading solution should also mean we should get pretty bleeding edge tech.

Proprietary storage can suck my balls.

Using proprietary storage isn't that surprising. They've already said that the SSD that will come with the console is being specially developed to make it work as efficiently as possible. The last thing they want is for people to start installing their own SSD which wouldn't work as efficiently and then have people complaining because the console is now slower.

Was there a reason PC games used to come in huge boxes?

So each one would feel like a big Christmas surprise, with the rattling of the CD ROM or floppy disks only serving to accentuate the anticipation and delight.

I thought it was so they could dominate shelf space and just be something awesome for the shop window.
Screw the planet what I want is a game where the packaging almost fills an entire carrier bag  .
If it's a flight sim chuck in a manual that has enough info to get me into flight school for the Eurofighter.

More new patent stuff: PS5/PSN may allow save game states to be shared, and for demos to be created and shared. Or something.

PlayStation game demos are coming back with Sony's ambitious new plan Sony may let PlayStation gamers share custom user-created gameplay demos and saves with friends

That’s a pretty cool idea, say if you and your friends are playing a game but one gets stuck on a boss, you could load their save, beat it, then send it back to them to continue

Haven't clicked through to the link but that image just looks like its for trimming captured video rather than anything more elaborate than that.

I had the info about PS5 Game Slice over two weeks ago because it was actually embedded in the patent for the PS5 network controller patent. Everyone else overlooked it, and I half wrote up a whole video, but I prioritised other stuff and never got around to it, otherwise I would have had a bona fide exclusive. :fp: I don't have the time to do it today either.

PS5 network connected controller patent (images and text about Game Slice can be seen in the Description and Drawings section: https://patentscope.wipo.int/search/en/ ... ONALBIBLIO

PS5 mini-games patent: https://patentscope.wipo.int/search/en/ ... ONALBIBLIO

I understood it that a PS5 game will allow a player to create a gameplay segment, from within predefined parameters, that can be shared, then others can play it and compete competitively to get a high score.

Stadia has a similar thing to Game Slice coming next year -

The Magic of State Share, Explained

Have you ever found a gaming video or seen a screenshot of someone else’s gaming experience, and wished you could jump in and play what you saw? With Stadia’s State Share feature, your game can support just that — gamers can jump in and play what they see in videos and screenshots shared via links or on YouTube.

How it works

Games that choose to integrate State Share can pass game state data to Stadia during gameplay. Stadia will record these states along with any media such as a video, screenshot or live stream created through the platform.

Image

When the player chooses to share the media, they are asked for consent to include their game states along with the shared media. If consent is given, viewers will see a button next to the media that allows them to play the experience they see. Those who click on the button will be brought into Stadia to play the game associated with the corresponding state. Stadia will launch the game with the state, and it is up to the game to use the data within the state to tailor the experience for the new gamer.

Some possibilities for State Share

As with all of our features, we provide a set of examples of what we think could work well, but you should use the features as fits best in your game. Some ideas we had:

Procedurally generated world: If your game has a procedurally generated world where no two gamers would have the same experience, you could integrate State Share to provide the random number generator seed as a state. When someone shares a video of their version of your world, others can find that video and jump into that same world.

User generated content: If your game has user generated content such as custom maps, you could integrate State Share and provide the map as a state, so that when someone shares a unique custom map via a screenshot, others can find that screenshot and jump into that map.
Promotional giveaways: If you want to generate engagement, you can integrate State Share and run a promotional event where there is a special item in the game that is difficult to find, and only those who jump in from a video with a specific state would be granted the item.

Speed runs: If you had a huge speed running community, you could integrate State Share into your game and allow those who find a speed run video to challenge or race against the ghost of the gamer who posted the video.

The possibilities are endless. We can’t wait to see what you dream up!

Yeah it was part of the original Stadia reveal. As one of the more interesting features of the service it was obviously absent for the actual launch!
