BACKWARD COMPATBILITY DATABASE

Holpil wrote:Had a bit of free time over Christmas so I worked on a small project some of you might find useful, thought I'd share: https://www.backwards-compatible.com

I built it mainly for myself just as an easy way to look up performance of PS4 games on PS5. Much of the data came from Resetera but I've since been updating as and when games get patched, plus you can browse by various tags like Locked 60 FPS, HDR, Exclusives etc.

Let me know if you spot any errors or have ideas to improve it!

- Mark Cerny is once again the Lead System Architect
- 8 core AMD 7nm Zen 2 based on third generation Ryzen
- Ray-tracing support with custom AMD Navi GPU
- Custom AMD unit for 3D Audio, also aided by ray-tracing, a big upgrade
- Extremely fast high-end custom SSD storage faster than any solution currently available for PC
- Technically supports 8K but Cerny demoed Spider-Man load speed improvements (15s on PS4 → 0.8s on next-gen PS) on a 4K screen
- New Virtual Reality platform strongly hinted at but also supports current PSVR (meaning millions of VR users 'day one')
- Death Stranding might be a cross-gen title (speculation in article based on Cerny reply)
- Physical Media
- Backwards Compatible with at least PS4
- Four years in development so far
- 2020

I could see them disapearing at least for Microsoft.

By moving to a more 10 base it means all subsequent consoles will be the same base allowing games to just work kind of like pcs, they will bring out a faster version every few years that is incrementally better but not a bigger leap and you upgrade when you want as stuff will work.

There always needs to be a cut off point with consoles to avoid confusion, only SEGA have attempted otherwise (Mega CD/32X), and it killed them.

PS4/PS4 Pro and Xbox One/Xbox One X are all still the same generation, and the "enhanced" consoles will always be held back due to developers needing to support the "base" consoles.

The console market isn't like the PC market where consumers are savvy enough to check they have the right GPU/CPU/RAM combo before buying a game. Console gamers simply look at the console logo at the top of the game box and are safe in the knowledge the game will be fully compatible.

I'm happy for this gen to last as long as the last, very happy with the current line up and the software we are getting thanks to indie support

I've put 2020, but it could easily be 2021. No way its 2019.

No way this gen is shorter than last when you factor in mid-gen upgrades, PC hardest advancement slowing and diminishing returns.

I'm going with either late 2020 or late 2021.

My guess is Christmas 2019 for PS5 with Xbox Two a year later.

4K will be the main resolution with no support for 8K and the main advancement will just be on the CPU side with only a slight upgrade to GPU.
Atari will come back into the console building business in 2022 and quickly establish themselves as the dominant market leader with a machine that looks exactly like the Atari ST and sells 175 million units at $600.

I can't see it happening until well into 2020.

For all the pushing of 4K right now, which, quite frankly is nothing more than a buzzword right now for consoles users, people simply aren't upgrading their TV's at the pace TV companies want them to do so.

4K isn't going to be the norm anytime soon so why cater to a market that simply isn't there yet. 2020, 4K, standard, maybe.

True

HD was lucky in that it coincided with LCD, most people who bought HD TVs in the late 00s did so because wanted a flat panel.

4K/UHD doesn't have anything revolutionary like that, not to the average consumer anyway.

Yeah I don't think 4k will be much of a thing for a while, I'm certainly not upgrading anytime soon there just isn't any real point.

I don't think we'll see a next gen until MS or Sony, whoever goes first, is confident that they can ditch physical media.

I know this gets talked about a lot but I just don't think the infrastructure exists for everyone and a lot of people will be just unable to use a machine with no physical media player.

Maybe we'll eventually see a relaxing of the rules and there'll be PRO/X exclusives.

If you really want to push games forward you need much more CPU power. If you want more densely populated environments with better physics, animation and AI, that's where the bottleneck is. Alas graphics and resolution are far more tangible and easier to market for platform holders and games developers alike.

4k takeup is going to be held back by our broadband infrastructure. So many people choose to use streaming services now for the majority of their content (and those who don't are even less likely to have/want 4k) but very few people have access to 4k-capable broadband.

I mean, even hd isn't standard yet. Can't even watch regional news on BBC in hd.

4k is a long, long way from being mass market, no matter how many tvs they sell.

I think we are rapidly approaching a point where the infrastructure will be good enough for a sufficiently large percentage of the market that Sony/MS and the publishers will be willing to write off the remainder for a few years while they catch up. If that means holding back the rollout of the next gen for 12/18 months then they'll do just that.

They could easily go usb drive media instead of disk. Physical media doesn't have to mean disk.

It doesn't matter if a game is delivered by disc, usb drive or in a pot of tapioca, publishers want out of physical media.
