Can Sony top the E3 church? Can Microsoft do worse than some of the frankly shameful Kinect stuff?
All we know is at least one of them is going to do something shockingly gooseberry fool and think it's a fantastic idea :slol: .

I wonder what the new main feature/"gimmick" will be next gen?

Eg:

PS1 - 3D
PS2 - DVD
Wii/PS3/360 - Motion Controls
PS4 - VR/Streaming
Xbox One - Kinect/Media

VR headsets will be more prominent, but they're already a feature on PS4. Hopefully they'll be wireless and 4K, but that will mean launching years after the consoles.

Streaming will also grow, again already on offer on PS4.

Ultra HD Blu-ray should be standard too, but XBO can already use it for movies.

PS5/XBtwo: They will plug directly into your brain and so there will be no need for a TV or a VR headset. All games will be 30fps 720p as standard.

I think every console will launch with a version that has no physical media.

Yeah, both should offer cheaper disc drive-less versions of the next systems, maybe even thrown in a 3 month sub to PS Now/Gamepass

8K is going to become a thing halfway through, so that'll be the big selling point for their mid gen refreshes again just like 4K was this time.

8k even at 30fps would surely take a shitload of cpu/gpu power? Can't even see a refresh being that powerful!.

I can't envision a scenario where the next gen is capable to meaningful 8K either. Even with a re-fresh.

If the PS5 isn't out until 2020, they won't release a mid gen model until 2023/2024. That's a long time for technical advances.

Look at Samsung at the moment - I think they have surprised everyone by getting an 8K TV onto shelves so relatively cheaply. By 2023 they'll be the equivalent of a grand today.

I think the biggest issue is that broadcast hasn't even properly caught up to HD yet, let alone 4k. I realise that's in the UK; I'm not sure what the deal is like across the rest of the world.

I doubt 8K will be available for the next gen of console gaming but I guess as we don’t know how powerful the PS5/XBtwo will be, it is hard to say if any mid gen refresh could deal with it.

I’d hope that the PS6/XBthree would be able to, but by then we will probably be wanting 16K. ;)

Meh, broadcast TV is dying anyway.

Netflix and Amazon have more subscribers than Sky/Virgin/BT now.

More people under 24 watch more Netflix than BBC/iPlayer.

True enough. I actually wrote a blog for my company about that yesterday

I sometimes watch BBC and ITV out of habit as that's what I've always done, loved CBBC and CITV growing up. Kids today can't even name a single BBC or ITV show but can reel off a list of American Netflix cartoon and YouTube streamers.

BBC's for old people, ITV's for middle-aged women, their futures are bleak.

Nice to see that Eastenders and Corra have died on their arses

Absolute shite. My 2 year old could tell you about Hey Dugee and Shaun the Sheep, my 3 year old nephew could tell you all about Bing. My teenage cousin loved Blue Planet 2 and Planet Earth 2 and loves Doctor Who. My 22 year old cousin is obsessed with I’m a Celebrity.

Kids/young people are watching a lot of Netflix and YouTube, but they are not completely abandoning terrestrial TV.

Your own picture shows this:

Image

In 1987 there were 5 channels and the most watched had 28 million viewers.

In 1997 there were 52 channels and the most watched had 19 million viewers.

In 2007 there were 262 channels and the most watched had 14 million viewers.

In 2017 there were 342 channels (plus Netflix, Amazon, YouTube etc) and the most watched had 14 million viewers.

It is hardly surprising that the total viewership is down when the audience goes from a choice of 5 channels to a choice of 342 (plus streaming & on demand). 68 times as many channels but only a 50% drop in viewers for the most watched? That’s not bad at all.

Viewership for the highest rated programmes on TV haven't really budged since 1997. Take Blue Planet for example - a lot of that has been watched via iPlayer, disc and download. The figure for iPlayer was something like 4.5 million at the close of 2017. Add the rest on top and that exceeds Diana's funeral. Worldwide, God knows what the figure increases to.

BBC have sold the majority of their shows I would watch to Netflix (The Last Kingdom being one example) so there's little reason for me to tune into the Beeb these days.
