As a PC gamer I am very interested in the VR side of things. If there is widespread take up of the technology next gen then we could expect the price of the hardware to tumble and a lot more games to incorporate the tech. I am supposing this is the whole point of the 8K thing as that much definition doesn't seem much use for a normal display, but it's very useful for VR. 4K resolution for each eye seems like a plan.

Personally, I am really thrilled we are seeing a generation of consoles that improves so much over the previous. The last couple of iterations have been disappointing and it's nice to see real progress again. AMD deserved most of the praise, I suppose.

If the idea is for a 1080p and 4K version of next gen I could see that working quite well.
Plenty of people are completely fine with 1080p as they don't have a 4K set or game on a TV that isn't the main TV in the house which isn't 4K so for them the extra power in the more expensive console would be completely wasted.
I'm actually quite interested in seeing how a 1080p next gen console would work. Are all the other components identical and it's just a beefier GPU in the more powerful unit. Does the cheaper unit still play all games with the exact same physics and AI or are they somehow dialled down.

It could be quite an interesting choice and I can see even some people with 4K sets going for a cheaper option if the only difference is resolution and the saving is quite substantial.

Apparently this is the PS5 dev kit, that or a design even Alienware would balk at.

Yasuhiro Ootori is a engineering director at Sony. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1h8dvqEItc)

And this is apparently a PS4 dev kit:

I still think all Xbox's should be in the shape of an actual X.
It just makes so much sense.

V means Ventilation.

If they call it PSV then they really are just trolling the poor Vita.

The concept art, early stage designs or in this case dev kits are always more interesting and wacky than the machines we end up buying in the shops. I recall the original Xbox being I think it was a silver X.

But it's called a bloody XBOX it should be a box in the shape of an X.
GameCube was a cube so Nintendo know how this works so I think we should all take Microsoft to court and demand a refund for false advertising.

I wonder if we'll see any leaks of next gen game footage running on devkits or pictures of the machines themselves or is everyone involved handcuffed by really ugly NDA's now and would likely be fired and face some other legal problems?

I'm sceptical about this 'PS5' design.

* This information does not come from a photo of a dev kit that's in the wild.

* Most dev kits are a just a big ugly anonymous PC box. Why would Sony go to the effort of designing a unique chassis for the PS5 dev kit? Would it be to excite developers and publishers that their consoles is going to be special?

* Also, the design is drawn in a format that is used for patents, however Sony is not going to be patenting a dev kit design!

* The person who shared the info is a bugs tester and student games developer with no reputation.

* The source is a Netherlands or Brazilian? website translated here:
https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fnl.letsgodigital.org%2Fspelcomputers-games%2Fsony-playstation-5-console%2F

* They first have one image, then update their story with more images claiming "We have just managed to get more product images showing the patented device from different angles." So why didn't they get all the images at once? Why don't they say where they got their images from. The suggestion is this is a leak from a patents office.

* The designer is listed as Yushuhiro Ootori. Push Square believe this is a Technical Director. His name is actually spelt Yasuhiro Ootori. Why TF would Sony get the spelling wrong?

This is the stage in the pre-reveal of a console where we all want to believe! And it may well turn out to be true. But my BS radar is beeping.

How would we even be able to tell from a still image? PS4 Pro games have 4k checkerboarding and XBO X often has 4K. The only giveaway would be for graphics experts like Digital Foundry who may be able to detect raytracing that isn't possible on current-gen.

srs bsns, the post. Half the fun of a new gen is the speculation.

 And I love how Sony getting something as simple as the spelling of an employee's name wrong is the least likely reason why that's going to be fake. Because, you know, Sony's track record for strawberry floating up.

Has anyone ever tried making a custom case for the original Xbox in that shape?

If they did they've done a really good job of keeping it hidden - can't find gooseberry fool on it on YouTube. Best search term I could come up with: original xbox case mods
