It doesn't work at the moment thanks to Sony's poor online infrastructure. Once a competent company tries it then it will be massive.

Internet reliability and speeds around the world need to be comparable to electricity supply and at least 200 mb/s. Not happening for a long while yet. Sony’s online infrastructure is pretty damn good imo.

People really need to stop banging on about "speed" when trying to undermine streaming services. Latency is the thing that will make the biggest difference.

In terms of speed yes you need a minimum, but it is a hell of a long way from 200Mbps. A 4k UHD Bluray is generally encoded at somewhere around 70Mbps for reference.

They will all eventually do?

But you also said:

gamerforever wrote:Look I would pay whatever they want at launch as it will be the best console ever made and will likely be the end of MS and Nintendo hardware (fingers crossed) Nintendo will then make games exclusively for Sony along with Sega and MS will come out of the videogames market and stick to Windows.

So are they all going to do it, or are Sony going to be the only console manufacturer?

Google and apple will try to compete. I really hope neither gets any market share. Streaming console gaming just wouldn’t work as a day to day product in this time. Maybe in 50 years time.

Let’s say PS5 and XBT launch with base and Pro models, how likely is it that devs would target the more powerful machines and then scale down for the base versions? Would that be more likely having the systems at launch than if they were mid Gen?

I think the 20th February 2020 release date reveal for The Last of Us Part II tells us something about the PS5 reveal date. For Sony to release it just before the start of the crowded March window (FF7R, Watchdogs Legion, Cyberpunk 2077) it might mean they felt that after, April onwards, would be too late as it would be competing for the media spotlight with PS5/Xbox Scarlett. So perhaps we will get an official reveal around then?

I would imagine they want at least 6 months to build hype for next gen so April is likely a good shout for the final reveal time.

Surely the best way to judge a console is by how quickly it threatens to set itself on fire? It's the main Digital Foundry test but they don't show it because those health and safety Nazi's get in the way.

Rumours -

According to our tipster, earlier PS5 prototypes have been in the hands of developers since 2018, but Prospero, the current dev console, was first delivered to developers early this summer.

In terms of graphics performance, our tipster offered fuzzy details about how each console would handle ray tracing differently, but frankly, the statements were too hard to parse, so we won’t reprint them here.

According to our tipster, Microsoft will make the camera a huge priority, while the Prospero kit uses older camera technology. (It’s worth noting that what’s in a development kit doesn’t necessarily reflect what ships in a final product.)

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s camera is allegedly capable of 4K resolution with just a two-frame latency between what is recorded and what appears on a stream. (The current Microsoft Kinect camera gets about 8ms to 10ms of latency.) The tipster claims Microsoft is showing off the capabilities of the camera using a Snapchat-like demo that changes with the in-game lighting.

the future consoles will have the “greatest compute jump in any console,”

Hopefully optional cameras for both consoles.

Could the cameras be built into the system for VR for next gen VR headsets? I guess for streamers as well as thats pretty big now

I'd rather the PS5 to be able to link to any bluetooth headset than have a camera.

industry chatter is also pointing to the PS5 being the most powerful of the two.

I'd be a tad surprised at that just because Microsoft have recently been so happy about having the most powerful machine so I'd expect them to announce after Sony and respond by tweaking the final hardware so it retains an advantage.
Either way it seems that next gen is going to be a decent upgrade with both companies trying to make the most of the hardware available at whatever pricepoint they finally decide on. I'm thinking £450 will be the launch price.

Fills me with excitement, but its about the games at the end of the day and Sony will definitely have some great exclusives.

Rejoice at the infinite power of the glorious and righteous PS5! Cower beneath its might! Oh how we wretched mortals long to warm our bones in the loving and all-encompassing glow of its perfection. Swear fealty to its majesty and serve your new Lord till death!

:o  :o

Jim Ryan in not talking complete balls shocker:

"The track record of the incumbent platform winning the next time around is not a great one," Jim Ryan says. "So the major thrust of my executive energy is to avoid complacency."
